Boot / Trunk wont open + Roof Faults

Post by huseyin88 » Thu Nov 15, 2018 10:47 am

Hi Guys,
having a bit of an odd issue.
My boot only seems to open with my key and not via the roundel however i have even ordered a replacement tried it but no luck. i tested the roundel open and closed circuit and seems fine same results on both.

I do have smart top installed and thats really the only way i can get my roof to go up or down. i have noticed that when the car engine is on the roof tends to be more likely to throw a fault and stop where as when its only on ignition it doesnt throw a fault as often.

The roof throws errors like hard top not latched when driving around.

Roof Down:
Sometimes i will get the jerky rear window as it rises over the roof and then it seems ok'ish till the last bit.
it seems to stop half way through sometimes but 9/10 times it will always struggle on the last part once the roof has been put in to the boot when the boot is closing it pauses with about 5cm's left to close and then after waiting a bit and pressing the close button again it will go down.

Roof Back Up:
It can stop in the last parts where the roof is latched on but then the rear window section is left on top of the roof  Then i have to wait a bit again and then keep pressing the roof close button and it eventually plays ball and i get the issues with the windows not closing all the way.

Ironically however when ever i seem to do it with the car off via the remote either pressing lock /open 3 times or a long press to open/close the roof (via smart top) it just does it and doesnt pause or stop.

I have removed smart top completely and tried this all and its even worse without it to be honest.
I have looked at the write up via dietcokeman which is fab but i disconnected the two microswitches at the end of the arms which are located on the inner boot but the roof just stops working so i would assume they are fine...?
I'm going to go and order some now from BMW and hopefully they are in stock so i can do it today to at least test.

Not sure if its related but i also have an odd one where when i unlock my car my rear indicators remain on but not the side or front ones..

i do have a the water ingress issue with the boot which im going to try and seal up today.

I have had to replace my pdc controller as it was totally wrecked from a previous water ingress and have noticed it getting worse again with the water build up. Checked my roof controller module and that seems to be starting to go green too.. but this was all happening before that happened when i swapped out the previous pdc unit.

just wondering if anyone has any ideas if they have had any of these issues before?
any help of pointers would be much appreciated :)

Boot / Trunk wont open + Roof Faults

Hi, I would get the codes read and see what that reveals-the water ingress sounds like a smoking gun & needs resolving before buying new components imho :?

All of your faults seem like a roof module fault (they are all connected with that system). If you've removed the SmartTop and it was no better then at least you can discount that. With the roof module going green then I'd suggest replacing that after making sure you have no more water ingress and it's all dried out in there. As the prices aren't exactly cheap, even used ones, I'd see if a local member wouldn't mind trying theirs on your car first.
But as Smartbear says, get your codes read and see what that throws up.

Thanks guys, I connected carly and loaded up all my initial backup configs from when i first connected carly up and it seems to of resolved the issue with the indicators staying on so i must of switched them on somehow playing about.

I have a whole heap of errors there are prior to me resetting the coding options which i think some may have gone, i'll run another diagnostic when i go back to finish the sensor, they show:

00CD95
005F10
00F1C
00A56B
00A56A
00E71D
00A6E8
00A739
009D00
009CCE
009CC6
009CC5
00A8C3
009CD5
009CD4

Regarding the hall sensors i checked again and realised there is actually 3 connections on the rear right and i only initialy found 2. ironically same as dietcoke mans when i disconnected the hall sensor roof still worked. went down to bmw and the sensors gone up to like £150 something pounds. Ordered one and should arrive around 3:30 so ill go pick it up and install it today hopefully before i go for footy LOL! :?

i've striped out my boots rear right side and now coated all my ECU's in clingfilm and then some tape only sides and bottom leaving the top area where the connections are open.
Found a nice puddle in the boot so cleaned that up and just thinking how to resolve the leak as the seal and everything looks to be fine and its firmly in place cant even get it off.
i did notice there was a plug which is on the harness coming from outside just under the tail lights had been pushed out.. not sure if water came in through there but secured that back in now.
as a temporary thing i may leave the foam box and everything out and just monitor it to see if and when it does absorb any water where its from.

Boot still wont open though so will see if theres any change once i get the new sensor fitted in tonight. fingers crossed.

Ok note sure what i just done to the system.. but.. the boot seems to work now..

I opened the boot via fob
With a screw drive activated both latches on sides
Pressed the rou del to release boot and kept holding it.
Unlocked and locked car several times
Then keys stoped unlocking/locking car after a few attempts.
Tried to unlock boot. Wouldn't work via fob or roundel.

After a few secs unlocked car then all just seemed to work... not sure if there is a reset function/feature/process foe it but that just did the trick for me. I will post again tonight and in a few days to confirm all is well.

Just started car locked car from inside with engine running.
Tried to unlock boot wouldn't (obviously as doors are locked.)
Unlocked via dash button
Boot works..
WAHOOO!!!

so that's 2 put of three faults fixed today. Hopefully with the new hall sensor that will resolve my roof.. which only leaves a few other faults with my z :)

So after paying £150 for the sensor seems like it didn't do the job. However even with the new sensor plugged in it seems like it still does the same thing where the roof will still operate without that sensor plugged in...

Any ideas?
