Broken spring...retail suggestions?

Post by john-e89 » Mon Oct 29, 2018 2:54 pm

Bonjourno,

Found a broken rear spring on the 35is after a bang and then a rattle started, anyone any idea where to get an OEM pair from please? Stealers want over £200 for a pair.

Many thanks in advance.

Why not buy some after market springs, have seen them on internet.
If doing yourself, not too difficult, will need some cheap spring compressors to make job easier, from my experience.

You wont need any compressors for the rear springs, just under the bottom shock bolt and it will come out.

Yes i think you are correct, i think i needed the compressor for the fronts.
With the car jacked up and wheel off, i used a jack under the swing arm, then unbolted the damper. With a bit of a squeeze the spring came out.
The barrel springs are a rubbish design, too much load on the edge of the spring, surprised more don't break.

I don’t want it lowered or to buy a full kit as I’ll most likely be selling come spring..(no pun intended...)

Found a pair on flea bay for £76 delivered from Losjofors, a long time spring manufacturer so I’m most happy with that..!

Does anyone know what the OEM part number is for the rear springs on a 23i Sdrive 2010, std suspension (not the adaptive) with manual transmission

Looked on http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E89/E ... 10/browse/ which is great for all the other parts but just refers you to the spring chart which isn't there . Doh!!

If you are replacing springs, i would also change shocks, my originals were pretty awful at 50k miles.
I fitted some Bilsteins rear and later front.

Far better quality than came off, the shaft are larger diameter.
