Climate controls turn on randomly

Hello all
2009 z4 3.5i auto
50k miles
The weather here in southern california is hot but not that bad so I often just drive with the top up and windows down. I will get in the car and press fan-down until the climate controls turn off. Sometimes the system randomly turns back on ~3-5 minutes later and I have to turn it off again. Strikes me that this must be some kind of glitch.
Does this ring a bell to anyone else?

I believe it will be set on auto, then I turn the fan speed to off.
logically it should take that as a sign that I don't want it back on.

Maybe it's a wind-up?

Forgive my ignorance, but what's wrong with having the ventilation on? You can switch the AC off after all...

Force of habit, seems kind of weird to drive with all the windows down and the fans on

Two options,
1) Failing Battery (common in creating glitches)
2) Failing A/C control switches (has control electronics built in)

Its the opposite for me, its a habit to always have air coming in to the car aimed at the screen mostly to help keep it clear.
