Knocking Noise...

Post by hill.drw » Thu Jul 19, 2018 10:21 pm

Good Evening all!

Bit of a unknown here and i confess to being a total n00b at times with stuff like this... but... help is required! :)

I own a 2013 Z4 2.0i in valencia orange :)- beautiful car - however it recently had a slight whine from my engine.

I had assumed it was a bearing on (probably) the tensioner of the belt, however a few weeks ago - whatever was broken went bang!

Car seems to drive fine (although I confess the little i've driven it has resulted in the noise getting slightly worse...)

I've attached a video for the noise,

Your thoughts and advice is much appreciated... the BMW stealers want £2000 just to look at it - and not guaranteeing a fix at that! :( THe car itself has done 52,000 miles...

2nd... E89 SDrive 2.0... thurst bearing failure rendered the engine useless
3rd... E89 2.3i... The Doner engine for the 2nd... the transplant has begun!

The BMW dealers "want £2000 just to look at it." Two thousand? Surely not.

Whatever, just take it to any good garage.

Yup, a full day to strip the engine, (£900)
then a full day to put it back together (£900)

Not even a fix in there... :( Sad times

Avoid bmw & find a good Indy garage, I think you’re bill would be higher than that by the time they’ve added gaskets/coolant/oil etc :o
There’s no way I’d be driving the car with it sounding like that, I wouldn’t even start it again.

Really don’t like the sound of that, I agree with Busterboo, any good garage should be your first port of call

Just a thought is it possible to run the engine with the drive belt detached, could the noise be alternator, air con or tensioner related?
After all no different than if it had snapped.

I had a bearing go on a TR7 alternator, made a right racket.

Thanks guys,

Yea the car is now with my usual independent! He is going to have a look at it and see what he thinks! - I'll keep you posted.

Agree car doesnt sound great, but strangely doesnt seem to make much noise at low revs. although makes a bit more noise when it starts cold...

Sadly looks like i'll be getting rid of it - hopefully without too much of a financial hit!

Hopefully not just because of the knocking noise? I'm sure it's fixable..
