E89 EPS issue - resolved

Post by JamiesZ4 » Wed Jun 27, 2018 3:21 pm

Hi All

You may recall my previous issues with my power steering on my beloved E89 Z4. To recap, after the car had warmed up the EPS warning light would flash up on the dash display followed by a loss of power assisted steering. This issues started off as intermittent but over the space of a week became a permanent issue.

Having approached my tried and tested local indy, there diagnosis was that the steering rack was 'shot' and would need to be replaced, however they were only able to provide a new rack from BMW which rolled in at over £2.5K plus VAT plus labour, they couldn't find anyone who could either repair my existing rack or provide a refurbished rack.

Following this I was then recommended a local power steering specialist based in Greenwich, South London, who ran diagnostics with the same result, rack was knackered!! On top of which the car's ECU was unable to communicate with the PCB on the rack, effectively the car thought it didn't have a steering rack!! However they could provide a refurbished rack and then program that new rack to my car.

Well I finally have my car back today and whilst I've only had a short drive so far it feels absolutely amazing and no 'boing' warning noises so far so fingers crossed I am back on the road! Will have a more in depth test drive at the weekend but so far, things looking good!

Interestingly, when I pointed out to the mechanic that E85's generally seem to have steering rack issues as a more common problem, it appeared to me to be rare on E89's he mentioned that he was starting to see more E89's coming in with similar issues as the Mk2 Z4's become older...
Current - E89 Z4 SDrive 3.0i - last of the normally aspirated six cylinders
Gone - E85 Z4 2.2 SE
