RFTs and mixing

Post by spence89 » Tue Jun 12, 2018 9:25 pm

Hi All,

Had my Z4 about 4 months now and loved it up until about 4 days ago. Fail MOT due to uneven tyre wear, inner edge to the cord and outer at 6mm on both rears. I wanted to get the runflats off so thought this a good opportunity to start with the rears. Replaced with Dunlop sport maxx rt 2's. Just had a 4 wheel alignment done as well.

Car handles like a drunk wasp. Anyone else experienced this? Heard mixing rft and nrft front and rear is a big no. Looking for some advice before I fork out for the fronts as well.

Tramlining is now terrifying above 60mph. More like George Clooneys boat in a perfect storm. Guess theres a little getting used to with the raised tread wall and softer wall.

Anyone else?

It’s not recommended but I ran runflat fronts with normal rears & I could drive it hard round corners with no problems.
With tyre wear like that I’d be getting an alignment carried out pronto :?

I ran rft front with new non rft Goodyear rears.
After a week i replaced the fronts with Goodyear non rft.
The steering was awful.
I think the rears were less rigid and allowed the car to natural absorb the bumps and wobbles, whereas the fronts were just doing there own thing and fighting the rears.
Trying to save a few quid, didn't work out.

Cheers flybobbie, yea i guess im experiencing something similar. On a dual carriageway its all over the place. You know what pressures you're running. Specialist just recommend 40 rear (standard) and 36 front (rtf) Thanks.

The handling characteristics of runflat & non runflat are totally different so shouldn't be mixed...........get them off

Yeah, found a couple of cross-ply in the garage. Trouble is they're both a bit old. Mind you, the two radials I've got are, too.

Anyway, just to be safe, put one of each on each side.

But like yours, spence89, car handles like a drunk wasp.

Have been running 42 rear and 38 front.
Have been thinking after seeing wear pattern, the rears should be slightly lower, so 40 is probably a good bet.

Did the specialist recommend 'standard' tyres on the front and rfts on the rear? :o

Kwik-Fit refused to put standard tyres on the front of my E86 with RFT's on the back.

Funnily enough, I have brand new Dunlops on the rear of mine, and the OEM RFTs on the front at the moment (as a temporary measure - aim is to have the same on the front as the rear within the month). I went out in the car last night and it does seem a little twitchy where before (on winters all round) it wasn't.

If Its that dangerous you would expect it to be illegal or at very least a MOT fail

MOT is a bare minimum standard, the tyre legal limit is 1.6mm over the central 75% with no requirement for tread on the remainder.........

How many people think that's a desirable situation ?

How many people think that's a desirable situation ?
& how many are offering opinion based on internet reading as opposed to actual experience
For the very purpose of curiosity I recently tried a set of 19s for a good while on a E86 Si , rears were standard , fronts were runflat ( all quality brand & 5mm minimum )
Ive run countless sets of different wheels & tyres on a variety of different Zs , out on the road in all manner of driving there was no way the mixed tyre set up showed up & whilst not doing track speeds i was more than enjoying the car , roads & speed limits  .
The simple truth is no , its not desirable & no you wouldn't actively seek it out as a option but its by no means the lethal danger some would like you to believe .

What are your alignment results OP?

Also if you had non run flats on the front why didn’t you replace the rears with the same? Or have I got it the wrong way around and the new rears are non runflats?

Also try 33/34 PSI Front and 35/36 PSI Rear
