Roof Issue - Fixed (update)

Hi peeps need a lil help!!!

So just got the dreaded problem so i might as well seek help. Basicly this morning went to put the roof down and it got stuck. The windows would roll down but the hood didnt unlatch and i got the symbol on the dash. Tried to put the windows up no avail and tried to lower it again nothing. Drove it for a few seconds parked up and pressed the button and the roof worked like a charm, didnt think twice about it. Drove an hour to work, parked up and tried to get the roof up the boot lid lifted up but the roof didnt lift out. Turned the car off nothing, eventually after me spazzing out and messing around with the hood open and close button it just went back and the roof closed. It seems as though its stuck but ive had a look at all the hood elements and they seem to be fine.

Im based in leicester so if there is anyone or any good recomendations for me in the nearby area to get it checked out that would be amazing. I have rang up bmw awaiting there call to book a check up but we shall wait and see. I will be plugging and obd scanner in and testing to see if there are any faults and will keep you guys in the loop.

Any help would be much appreciated. If anyone has faced something similar tag them in or let me know how you managed to get on. Every little help/ guideance helps.

So after two weeks, I finally have my car back. The sensors and micro switches were perfect not the issue. The roof wouldn't work because the hydraulic motor literally burnt out!!!! Replaced the hydraulic roof motor only to get the same symptoms as before where the roof would stutter and move weird/ get stuck. Indy went and got a new roof control module and its working brilliantly (touch wood). From what they've gathered - The roof control module messed up and was actioning the roof to open and close the roof at the same time sending way to much pressure to the hydraulic motor to which it'd run really slow heat up and poof.

Hope this helps someone else or another indy thats stuck. Two weeks of careful testing letting the hydraulics cool down before reactioning to make sure everythings in order, testing at different roof levels and seeing if the motion was detected, again thank you BMWMAN in derby for being amazing (no theyre not paying me they've just done a beautiful job)

I’ve had two different issues with the roof.

One was similar to that described and required a software update - according to BMW.

The second required a micro switch replacing.

Luckily both were covered under my extended warranty and took no time at all to fix.

So done an obd scan with no avail no fault codes stored or anything everything seems to be perfectly fine. Ive got it at my indy today for an inspection will keep you guys up to date with whats been happening. Depending on what they say seems to be an issue will contact brian the roof specialist on here and take it from there. Also on a side note my car is part of the recall so yay me!!

Just a quick update for you guy's indy's managed to get it working a shout out to bmwman again. Basically his tested all the microswitches and the hydraulics and he was mind boggled, the computer picked up an issue with the microsensor which detected that the roof didn't latch on when it was down but that's cuz it was stuck. He tested that microswitch and it was working completely fine, everything was completely fine. The only thing that was causing the roof to get stuck was the weatherproofing seal. From what he and I could gather, it caused such a suction that it wasn't letting the hydraulics push the roof open and close without the onboard computer going nuts because it took to long. After cleaning off the weatherproofing seals and resetting the computer everything was all good. Not to mention he and I both testing the roof many many many times !!!! A huge relief on my end and to top it all off managed to get a few coding bits done which include, daytime running lights on full wak, digital speedometer and mirrors closing on lock.

Honestly a huge relief and again a massive shout out to BMWMAN in Derby.

Yeah its pretty cool he did it with carly app. But on a side note, had no issues with the roof until yesterday this time same thing except the roof refused to go down, and the car got confused so all i could hear was a buzzing noise coming from what it seemed to be the roof trying to open, it was like it was stuck in a loop. Drove a lil and the noise was seemed like the hydraulic motor was trying to open the roof wouldnt stop, tried turning off the car and on again nothing continued eventually after like 10 mins or so stopped. Not tried to take the roof down today, but from what happened yesterday my final attempted nothing I just got the roof symbol on my dash and nothing so dont know whats going on. Rang up my indy and booked myself over but we shall wait and see might have to give the roof ninja over here a direct message.

I have read that repeated operation causes the lifting motor to overheat, wondering if you have damaged something there and the pump is buzzing??!!
Just a thought...

By us testing many many times, it's not to that extent it was more so just testing the movement and the seals to see how swift the motion of the roof was. I'm here at my indy as we speak again and hopefully going to leave her over with them to assess. I shall keep you guys updated.

So my indy just sent this over with a picture We’ve checked your issues regarding the roof. It didn’t take long to find the issue. The vehicle reported -50*C for the hydraulic pump temperature. On gaining access to the pump to investigate the fault was quickly highlighted. The hydraulic pump motor has had an internal malfunction that has mechanically seized the unit. The unit then has overheated to the degree of causing an internal fire. The unit it beyond repair. You are a very lucky man this could easily have set your car on fire. I have included photos to show you the failure. I have investigated why the pump has failed. It appears that an internal component has become dislodged and stopped the rotor from spinning leading to it burning out the windings.

I go to BMWMAN in Derby. Wouldnt recommend any leicester ones unfortunately, I would say ive been to autotechnik and have had a bad experience.

Trust me its worth the hours drive to derby

It occurs to me that, when I had Jaguars, I used an indy in Leicester who drives BMWs. I might try him again.

its been a pain, my cars in derby as we speak and im having to work from home/ do nothing. They don't do courtesy cars yet unfortunately but I can promise you that they wont go wrong when it comes to working on your BMW, im saying that purely because of the experience ive had with them and they arnt even paying me to promote them .

But yeah im waiting on my car to be fixed this is going to be an expensive repair
