Roof not working- water in boot floor

Post by Nizzy » Wed Apr 25, 2018 2:19 pm

Hi,

Bought a new 2014 E89 2l M Sport and vehicle has been serviced by BMW since then. Only done about 20000 miles. When 3 year warranty ran out in Feb 2018 took out BMW comprehensive extended warranty.

Roof stopped working this weekend and BMW have examined car and found water seal in boot lid has perished on inner edge ie not visible unless removed for inspection. Water has then entered boot and motor, control unit and part of wiring harness needs replaced. Water also in rear lights.

Has anyone knowledge of this fault. Paperwork has been submitted to BMW warranty people for their decision. BMW Customer Services also informed. Should get a decision of who will foot extensive bill. Hopefully I will just be paying excess! Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation

Nizzy

Looks like you got a 'Friday afternoon car' matey. No seal should be perishing on a car that age.

Look up 'Dietcokeman' on here and send him a message.

I don't think he can yet as this is his first post!

By the way, welcome to the forum OP.

IIRC you need to have 5 posts before you can use the private message facility.

I hope you get it fixed under warranty.

Roof not working- water in boot floor

Hi,

Thanks for the replies guys. Some way to introduce myself to the forum! Car has been spot on from day one and have loved driving it. Top down even when no sun, which can be quite often here in Central Scotland.

I have searched the forum a few times and have picked up some useful tips already. most recently re battery conditioner as I was missing Stop/Start function for a few months. Remedied by overnight charge.

For first two years car was parked on level drive but moved about a year ago and now faces up a sloping drive. May be related according to some posts. Will search other posts to get some info in case I have to fight my corner, forewarned is forearmed to coin a phrase!

Cheers

Callum

Roof not working- water in boot floor

Post by Nizzy » Tue May 08, 2018 10:18 pm

Hi,

Update re roof problem. Warranty did not cover repair as water ingress was due to leaking boot seal. Not really surprised that this was the case. BMW covered cost of parts which was substantial- 2 rear lights, motor ,wiring harness and fuse box etc. and I paid a 1/3 of labour cost which worked out not that much more than warranty excess I had originally been hoping for. Eastern BMW, Edinburgh covered rest of labour. Very pleased with result. Eastern were excellent to deal with and kept me up to date with progress of repair. Car was off road for a week.

Now noticed that roof is silent going up and down whereas before used to get a whine from electrics . Previously after washing car when I opened boot a reasonable amount of water would be deposited onto rear screen from high level brake light. No water now on screen after opening boot.

Will be checking boot floor regularly for any sign of water!

Cheers

Callum
