Hi all
Due to an operation I haven’t been driving for 3 weeks...but in alll honesty haven’t used the roof in months since winter. I have kept the parcel lid in the boot retracted to get more storage space in that time ...
This week over several days the roof mechanism warning light goes on once when I start the car , then goes away and nothing in the status information on my iDrive ... so chalked it down to a glitch ...
However today while driving home the roof warning light kept coming on and off.. arriving home I tested the roof to be sure and although the roof opens and closes ... the warning light will come up during the process, sometimes making the process stop till I keep the bottom pressed to open or close again...
Sometimes the boot lid part of the mechanism open very jerkily while the warning light goes off.
Thankfully after lots of tests the roof does eventually open or close completely ...
Could this be a roof sensor fault? I’m dreading taking this to the dealer even though I have a bmw extended warranty !

it sounds like you have a faulty micro-switch and/or hall sensor, mine had similar symptoms which I fixed with help from Bryan aka dietcokeman, if you have the warranty though I would just take it in to the dealer but take a note of the actual behaviour because its doubtful that any fault codes will exist and that can fox the BMW techs who seem to rely upon them these days. If you are good with diy its not a big job, I did mine in about an hour but it can get tricky with sticking screws etc. My advice would be though to get it sorted soon, dont be tempted to think that its sorted itself out you wouldnt want the roof stuck half closed at an inconvenient time (as happened to me!)

Cooper Reading charge approx £200/hour labour, the parts arent expensive but I could well see a dealer spending 2-3 hours on the job and a specialist roof guy (there are some around) could also be pricey (btw when you renew pay the bit extra for the £100 excess...its worth it!). If you are up for traveling (towards Aylesbury) I would drop Bryan a note and see if he can help you out, I think he would be a lot cheaper than either of the options you have at the moment.wilwong1971 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2018 5:59 pmCheers Keith ..huytonman wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2018 5:55 pm it sounds like you have a faulty micro-switch and/or hall sensor, mine had similar symptoms which I fixed with help from Bryan aka dietcokeman, if you have the warranty though I would just take it in to the dealer but take a note of the actual behaviour because its doubtful that any fault codes will exist and that can fox the BMW techs who seem to rely upon them these days. Always difficult to say without asking a few more questions, but from the info you have provided I would say that it's a cracked hall sensor . There are two hall sensors in the o/s boot lid ram, generally when they go, it's due to them cracking and not completing the circuit fully. This leads to the boot lid not lifting smoothly or stopping mid cycle . However it could be the boot lid micro sensors ( two of these, one each side and handed) but normally these create other issues that you haven't mentioned . Hall sensors and micro switches are around 25 quid each, so not too expensive and don't take long to change , about 1 hour each if your handy with spanners. Always happy to help or answer questions over the phone 07771847714
Here's a post that might help, click on the first link, but as I say if you need help just ring .

What's your logic with that ?metal licker wrote: ↑Sat Feb 17, 2018 5:13 pm I would have a look at the battery first if its been sat for awhile
If it were the battery, I'm sure the car would show some other issues along with a boot warning light. The OP hasn't mentioned any starting issues or other warning lights, only a roof warning light , and roof operation issues. I could be wrong but having done a few of these for people, the OP's information reads like others I've encountered .

My solution was a day spent driving around the lakes I guess it was the battery because it didn't happen again
