Thinking of changing my E85, 2.0 for one of these
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified ... New&page=1
Can members please advise on known issues, I've had most of the big ones on my E85, ABS pump, rear springs and timing chain and don't want to walk into a similar minefield.
Cheers,
Greg

Hi, there doesn’t seem to be much posted at all on here about issues with these cars. Are you aware that the 18i,20i & 28i all share the same engine/turbo? They are easily mapped for big power gainsgreg1953 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 06, 2018 6:28 pm Thinking of changing my E85, 2.0 for one of these

I had a an E89 35i ..... not quite the same animal. I had an issue with a broken valve spring, also had a recall and replacement of the HP fuel pump, the age old problem of 296 rims cracking, solved by putting real (non-rft) tires on it, the electrical junction box in the trunk melted, (I attribute that to a service tech not tightening a cable clamp after the valve spring issue so not directly a "car" issue). Other than that I loved the car. all the bits that are the same on the cars you are looking at were great, no probs.
I dumped the car because I was extremely po'd at the local BMW service. Still think its a great looking car , whatever the engine size

You were unlucky having a valve spring break on you! I’ve never heard of that happening to any zed, are they a double spring set up?mcbeee wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2018 6:27 pm I had a an E89 35i ..... not quite the same animal. Single springs on N54....
Never heard of any breaking on "N" derived engines. Apart from this one of course..

No idea if it’s a double spring setup, they had their senior specialist take the engine down until they found the problem, and that’s what it was. It took forever ... the alarm record showed a misfire on one cylinder. I drove home from Montana, had about 5 miles of Limp mode then it reset itself. Weeks later it started acting funny and the engine shut down...... after that repair the troubles started.
