I will hold my hands up and say that i'm probably guilty of this to an extent.
I relocate and fix roof motors regularly for people who tell me they've been quoted anything from £800 to £2500 by BMW and therefore save them a fortune.

Now if I see a car advertised either here, on ebay or wherever and its well below market due to a few issues that need sorting plus a potential £1000+ roof bill, Am i wrong to buy it and spend a few hours of my time fixing the roof, replacing the scuffed alloys, machine polishing it, etc, and then offering a tip-top car to someone else months later at its new achievable market value ?

I could spend my evenings watching Eastenders whilst cars rot away, but instead I choose to make my time productive and then both I and new owners reap the fruits of my labour. I dont see that as either wrong or immoral and I suspect Lynchy (who is a smart repairer) had similar intentions, but just jumped the gun by offering it up before the car was renovated.

I dont mind anyone trying to make a few quid as long as there's honesty and integrity involved and all parties are happy.

You're not wrong at all, Number5. The rules are wrong (to an extent).

Same with parts. It says things can't be sold for a profit, yet doesn't say anything about values increasing on parts, which means prices will inevitably go up and you could potentially make a profit on those items e.g aero skirts.

As said, it's a Grey area and the rules need to be adjusted. It's all well and good saying it's common sense, but until it's in black font in a screen, it means nothing.

Car buying is a bit different though, I guess. Usually you would haggle on price in person, rather than online.

I bought my Alpina from the forum 5 years ago. I can tell you now that I wont be giving it away at the price I bought it for back then and this is probably the same for many Coupe owners too 8)

Although I was given an idea I don't know for sure how much work the car needs so I probably jumped the gun myself in my initial remark; I apologise to Lynchy if I've impugned his good reputation. I had no problem with the price he mentioned, I just twitched a bit when I saw the difference between the before and after prices, given what I'd been told.

I'm certainly not questioning people's right to cover their costs in time, parts and expertise they've invested when trading. Nor to account for movements in market price. I won't be selling my Frogeye for what I paid for it 14 years ago either, not if I can help it.

The forum sales rules (which I hadn't read until mentioned here) are the same - verbatim - as those on the avforums classifieds, so they appear to be off-the-shelf, so to speak. I think they work well to protect buyers and sellers in the consumer electronics market where scammers like to play. I totally agree they don't suit car buying *at all* as that's usually done on a handshake in person after inspection and a bit of a haggle.

Update, the car is now sold and Eddie Is a top bloke. I have been offered more for the car after Eddie saw it 2 weeks ago, no money had been exchanged and I could have sold it from under him. As been said before it just been sitting unused for months at a time. My intention was never to sell it and flog my Triumph Stag. Then prices for stags starting rising by a lot so decided to keep it.
I put a dent in the front wing while parking and the paint match to repair was not that good as you can see in the picture.

Good Luck Eddie

Wait... People are complaining that someone is spending money on a car to fix it up then charging more money when they sell it on??

Well done Ellipsoid. A gracious admission to what could have turned a sour thread. I think everyone has added their thoughts and its raised some valid points. Lynchy has collected the car and the seller has also showed integrity in honouring the agreed sale to completion.

A happy ending and all parties content.
