My old man has (currently selling) a 981 Boxster S and I have to say, it’s one hell of a car.
Relaxed when it needs to be, but bulletproof interior and in sport mode is a totally different car.
Around a track it’s amazing what cars it’s quicker than - perfect weight balance and twice as much storage as a Z4M. Amazing really

You do notice the weight difference, especially when going from a Z4M to an E93 M3. They’re not called ‘buses’ for no reason.tomscott wrote: ↑Fri Feb 08, 2019 7:00 pmMy dad has the coupe for 2-3 years and tbh it was a bit meh compared to the e46 but bit of a different car more grown up comfortable and less chuckable.
They are about 200kg heavier but at the end of the day similar to the e89 if you want a fast a-b that seats more than 2 that you can use all year round with the folding hard top it’s not a bad option. Plus there isn’t much under 20k that gives that level of use the e46 vert is a horrendous car you can literally feel the chassis wobble over every bump.
Those kind of cars like my 4s the experience is complexly different.the noise of the induction and exhaust is really incredible vs a coupe
When I was a bit younger I thought the same with no compromise low weight and stiff but really if you think of actual use and priorities not one of my own cars will see a track and the weight aspect is much less of an issue. Unless it’s designed specifically as a roadster then there are always compromises and really there aren’t that many big engined roadsters around.
Even my E46 is heavier than the Z4M and I’ve noticed it, although now that I’ve had the car a while I’ve gotten used to it.
As you said the E9X is more ‘grown up’ and offers more comfort however the E46 M3 is nimble, well balanced and still practical.
In regards to the OP’s comments, I agree that the Z4MR is probably the best 2 seater roadster south of £20,000.

The more things change, the more they stay the same springs to mind.
From the day I joined this forum till today, there's nothing really as a complete package that competes with an E85 for me in the £3-10k price bracket. Yes there's other cars that all have their strengths, but if you want a decently proportion (6ft driver) rear wheel drive sports car that is good fun to drive, fairly reliable and doesn't cost the earth (generally speaking) to put right when they do go wrong. Where do you go other than a Z4?
Things get a bit more interesting in the £10-20k bracket withe Z4M and the Porsche Boxster S being the two stand outs for me.
But really if I was going to truly upgrade to a newer, more modern car that is inspiring to drive I think I would have to go all the way to £30k plus and a Porsche 981S.
Yep the same situation as 2015!
