How to remove gauge cluster and clean MPH & TAC lenses

Post by AceHankster » Sun Oct 22, 2017 8:41 pm

Okay...this one was a real piece of cake. Task? Clean the plastic lenses for the MPH & TACHOMETER gauges. To start off, lower the steering wheel into the lowest position...no need to lock it. Be sure the ignition is off and the key is out. Proceed to removing the single screw at the top underside of the gauge cluster. It is best to use an adjustable snake type extension suited with the appropriate TORX fitting attached to a rechargeable screw driver. Once the screw is removed, gently work the cluster assembly from the dash socket. Once removed, position the cluster assembly to the right of the steering wheel atop the dash for the electrical plug removal. Release the cam lock fastener from the plug housing sliding it to the left...it needs to be full pushed down for the plug to be removed. Take the assembly to a clean table, preferably inside your home for disassembly. CAUTION!!! Be aware, walking on carpet will generate static electricity and if your hands touch any of the electrical components during assembly and a small spark occurs, electrical component damage will result most likely detonating the integrity of the circuit board. With the appropriate TORX bit, remove the 4 screws from the back of the assembly which will allow for complete disassembly. There are several snap clip points built into both assembly halves. Gently work the clips loose and separate the black housing from the gauge bezel portion of the assembly. Once the housing is separated, loosen the circuit board clips from the gauge bezel and separate very gently. At this point the lenses can be easily and readily cleaned. Reassemble the gauge cluster assembly in the reverse order as noted above. Reinstall the assembly into the dash socket after reattaching the electrical connection...be sure to engage the cam lock before reinserting the assembly. Insert the single screw back into the top underside of the assembly and you should be off and running. Take note, I did not disconnect the battery during assembly. The cluster will only require the clock to be reset by pushing both center gauge cluster buttons at the same time using the left button to change integers and the right button to move right of the hour position.

Hope this helps all you DIY'rs...

These bimmers aren't so hard to work on...but you gotta have a passion for it, or go buy a Honda or something else.

Rockin' my 2007 BMW Z4 3.0Si !
