bumping this thread for those that havent seen it and also because ill be removing the scuttle panel to do a cleanup.....

i think from what ive read its best to order 8 new clips for the scuttle panel so i can replace them. i love little jobs like this!!

OP if you still around, well done!!

edit all clips and what not ordered, they only come to like 3 quid, looking forward to ripping this out and going OCD, mine looks rather dirty, ill post pics when finished :-) winter job maybe??

a couple of things to help..
be very careful lifting wiper arms off, they can snap,if possible use a wiper puller.
the best tool for removing the centres in step 7 is called a pigs foot and it just levers out the centres.
the pigs foot is also the way to take the wiper pan off, slide it under the wiper pan, glass side,at the end,pop the clip out of its socket and work your way along.
hope this helps

Did mine yesterday after being stuck a few times last week with the wipers stuck at 45 degrees in the pouring rain!

When I bought the car the previous owner was up front that the wipers were iffy, he even had a mechanic look at them - he obviously didn't use the web as he hadn't worked this one out! Trouble is he obviously didn't take much care - one of the 4 screws was missing, the other 3 were mangled - I had to wedge a T25 in what was left of the hole to get them out, also 4 of the 8 clips were broken

I had a nice lot of compost festering in the scuttle, covered in a thick layer of dried leaves, most of which were holly - ouch!! The driver's side drain was totally clogged.

Great write-up, many thanks

Not sure if you have a roadster, if you do I would check your roof drains

Accessing relays behind fuse block. Instructions are for LHD car.

Remove glovebox and panel below it. Below fuse block are 4 screws. The left one is not directly below the fuse block, the other 3 are. Remove the outer 2 of the other 3 screws. The centre one may remain. Note how pin at top of fuse block fits into a guide depression for reinstallation. Pull fuse box downwards.

Disconnect negative battery terminal. Photograph or label, then remove plug connections at right of fuse block. (TIS instructs to remove all fuses, don't see how this is necessary.) Open cover at top of block, remove nut at top right corner and remove battery positive lead.

Photograph or label, then remove more plug connections on reverse side if they obstruct access. It is now possible to remove relays as required.

To completely remove fuse block, remove any remaining connectors, then remove cover at top reverse side. Unscrew nuts underneath and disconnect remaining cables.

Hello bcworkz,
I just arrive at work and see your message. Great .. Thanks a lot. I can't believe how difficult it is to find it .. I have also went and called 2 bmw dealers. Even not able to tell me the relays reference. And they did not know at the moment the reference to order it .. They both asked me to find the relay and bring it to them ..Again,
Thanks a lot , bcworkz.

Great guide. I'm going to give this a go today. I've got both issues, wipers parking stupidly, then randomly stop working. Unfortunately the latter happened while raining on the way to work. Its an experience I don't want to go through again, kinda like driving without my glasses on/contacts not in.

The same here , my job for the week end :) I start with the relay .. I hope to get it out and get the reference needed .. I have a doubt, I have read somewhere, there are K36 and K37 with same reference for relay 1 and relay 2. There are 2 relays concerning the wipers?

So far I have removed 2 on the 3 plug connectoors at right of fuse block. I cant remove the pink one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does someone know if necessary before removing nut at top right corner and removing battery positive lead, before accessing relays?

Hi all,
Since I could not replace the relay ( I was very closed but could not access the relays behind the fuses) The pink connector impossible to unplug and impossible to move the panel .. I have today decided to follow the guide to fix problematic wipers
I indeed had problems :
- When the wipers stop on intermittent or single wipe they go slightly back up again before they actually stop.
- When operating on continuous movement they suddenly stop for no reason and don't start working again for a few mins or until you turn the ignition off and on again.

Now, I have remove grease and my wipers behave correctly .. single wipe is single wipe and wipers position is perfect when they stop.
I now need to test them under rain and check if they still stop for no reason ..

I used to get the problem after driving 40 minutes .. I have the feeling my wipers stopped much more often , after driving long (after something gets warm ????)..
have you guys had the same behaviour when your wipers suddently stopped?

Regards

Has any one else tried this fix to find that. It fixed the problem for a short while and then cam back? :(

I am hopping i will strip it apart again and find more gunk on the copper bit?
My little blue zed is in lots of bits. With lots of things started and not many finished! I may have found the limits of my time and ability!!

Yes I did, about 4 months afterwards

So I tried the grease cleanup a second time, but used cotton ear buds to get into the edges - 9 months on and after the wettest summer in decades all is well in the wiper department
