My DIY ipod and USB mount

Post by Russ59 » Sat Mar 15, 2014 11:04 pm

I know you can buy similar to what I have made but at a ridiculous price. I like to have a go myself.

I have a Parrot MKi9100 with ipod/USB and jack connections just hanging loose in the glove box but wanted to neaten it up a bit, so I converted my ashtray into a ipod/USB dock.
I started by making a flat sheet of fibreglass to use as the mount and cutting to shape. I suppose you could use plastic but I work with fibreglass so its as easy.
I had a surplus ipod adaptor, which you get with any ipod docking station for use in the home so I thought best to use it to make it look more of a factory finish.
I also cut a slot in the ashtray insert to thread the cables through.

Here's all the components before any assembly.

All stuck together before fitting. I used Araldite 2 part glue to fix all the parts together.

Time for fitting in the car. I removed the ashtray pod to be able to thread the cables up to the back of the dash. I then screwed the ashtray pod back and inserted the new ipod dock in place. Excuse the dust in the pics. lol

I like that making good use of an (in my eyes) unusable item (non smoker)
Previous car Bmw z4 2.0i sport 07 plate, sapphire black, M sport interior. now with Gaptech RCH+ module, MTec drilled and grooved disks, MV1 alloys in a dark chrome finish.
Current car E89 2014 20i sdrive msport with idrive.

Thanks guys for the positive comments, I didn't expect that at all.
It was a bit fiddly making it but worth the effort.
