Ticking . . . Update . . .
This seems to have got louder recently.
Recorded on phone hanging my arm out of the drivers window after a run with engine warmed up -

So whats making the noise, and does it need looking at?
Cars is 2008 3.0si on 55k miles.

Siriusly tho...
Ive had ticking tappety ticking in all of my bimmers from time to time and never had an issue and as soon as id become paranoid about it it then disappeared.
Could be anything from sticky lifters to pernickety valves.
I wouldnt worry unless u have power drop or oil consumption....or an engine seizure
Get the obd scanner out colin....

Does sound like an HVA problem, not good if it remains , known cold issue usually goes when engine oil up to temp . Has the car had little use lately or stop start moving.

Its up to temperature on that recording. I've reassured others on here when they post up their ticking engines
It just sounds louder. Cars running like a dream - sweet as a peach. So Hydraulic Value adjusters - normal noise then.
EDIT:
Has short commutes Mon to Fri, but always gets a long drive at weekends

Hi Colin, sounds a little clattery-is it due fresh oil soon? If it's a noisy lifter your short commute won't be helping much
I've never heard of any damage being caused by this though, it just sounds annoying-I'd give it an interim oil change to see if matters improve.

It happens on most bmws haha... Simply put valves don't get enough oil on short runs.. go for a decent/proper ride for 30-40 mins and it'll go away, Italian tune up style when I did short drives in my coupe it showed up once.. after a decent drive out it went away and never came back.
