Weird starting issue.

Post by the gill » Mon Jan 02, 2017 5:45 pm

Hello all. I've a 2008 Coupe auto. Started to get intermittent no crank no start a month ago and eventually decided to bite bullet and have the starter replaced. Unfortunately wasn't the fix so after reading on here decided to change ignition switch. This really is a 10 minute job except after changing mine and turning key (warning lights etc go on) but getting to the point of ignition the car just cuts out and remains completely dead unless I disconnect battery and reconnect. Then the ignition lights will turn on etc but same thing happens turning key fully.

I removed the OEM ignition switch and replaced the old BMW back but still the same. i've checked fuses F54 and F58 thinking I could have blown something but nothing.

Any ideas I'm getting desperate here. Thanks in advance.

OBD scan time!
How old is the battery?

Battery is not a youngster but breakdown chap who came out when it wouldn't start on me the other week said battery tested fine. It also cranked perfectly just before I replace the ignition switch.

OBD - is that BMW only or can I get anyone to stick any reader on the car?

You could try checking all the connections. Did you change the starter motor as it could be dirty connections or poor contact.

Hi Mike
All fixed I think. I disconnected the battery overnight and car cranked up first thing. I popped the new ignition switch back in and again the car would not crank so disconnected battery again and all seems well. I'll post up again if problem reoccurs.
Bought a C110+ scanner - handy bit of kit to have in the kit bag - no faults found.

"The Gill"

Not clear from your post but when you said that you disconnected and reconnected the battery after fitting the switch did you leave this switch on? or reverted back to your old/another switch.

You've got no more posts after Jan 17 so I'm assuming it's still going strong?

I have the same issue but not got to the root of the problem yet.

Ant.
