Hopefully be a "how to" fit rear springs post soon. It's actually a fairly easy process and involves the removal of a single nut.

Your broken spring may look like this.......

Quite a sight and probably better to get it sorted rather sooner than later. :)

My passenger side rear went on 30k just after it was 3 years old.

BMW didn't want to know as it was just outside the warranty.

Another pic of broken springs (my rears):

Image

The one on the left (in 3 bits...) was the rear driver's side - it'd snapped once before I bought the car (pre-purchase inspection found that) but it'd snapped again as I was driving along, causing both the broken bits to fall out - I did retrieve them from the road. The one on the right was the rear passenger one and the snapped-off bit was nowhere to be seen. Utterly shocking that this can have happened despite the car having covered less than 18k miles

Thanks for the pictures there. Indeed it is a shock that the quality is so crap.

Not sure we would get anywhere with BMW by compiling the list, but it at least points out to people that it may well be worth going aftermarket if your springs do break. I would certainly not put another BMW spring in my car.

Add my name to list.

Both rear springs failed at 40k

After complaining I had one spring replaced as good-will via BMW

and me :(

Z4 -3.0ise
Year - 2004 (53)
Mileage - 54,000
Spring - both rears replaced

Complained to BMW CS they said it was a case by case basis and they would still charge me £120 inpection fee (non refundable) even if they found the springs to be defective...not happy and got them replaced by a BMW specialist instead of the stealer!

May 2004 2.5 SE

Both OSR & NSR springs replaced,

Was told they were broken when the car was in for its service at about 31000 miles, so broke before then.

Broken coils...

2004 Z4 2.2se with 23,500 miles on clock.... both rear coils broken 1.5 turns from bottom.
What replacements do you recommend (don’t want to lower) … are they easy to fit?

Unless you get some springs custom-made, you've got to go either with the same BMW springs (and risk the same happening again) or aftermarket springs. But I couldn't find aftermarket springs that DIDN'T lower so I fitted Eibach Pro springs. They've lowered my Z4 by 15mm over a sport-suspensioned Z4, equivalent to a 30mm drop on a non-sport-suspensioned Z4. I'm not over the moon at lowering it (I'd rather have kept standard height) but was a necessary evil to get away from sh*tty BMW springs!

No idea how much moolah involved in custom springs though...

Welcome to the forum BTW! :D

Do the Alpina Roadster ones snap as well?

Might just go to an Alpina spring/damper setup if mine ever go, if their setup is any better.
