I've checked them on our 3.0 03 with 36,000 I've just bought and they are ok but seriously clean; I think they have already been done.

It affects other models too, I have a 54 plate M3 with 25k and I needed to change one, my old man has a 54 M3 too, also with 25ishk and he had two broken. I've been replacing them with Eibach's, seems to actually make the ride better and hardly lowered the car (M3) at all.

There are 3 Z4's in our office, all privately owned. All three of us have had to have our springs replaced. Clearly a design fault.

Dealership just called, after taking the car in for an exhaust rattle... they've called to tell me a spring has snapped on the back... odd that, as they told me they'd replaced (one? I thought they should do them both) one several weeks ago... either they fibbed, or the other one they didnt replace has now also gone!

Bummer!

Any point going to the local dealer (cooper Reading) and showing them a printout of this thread? Will they say "get the hell out of here" or will they say "looks like a real issue - we'll replace it free of charge"

Interesting thread!

My RHD coil spring broke in December 2008 my left coil spring has now done the same. Car details below:

2003 Z4 3.0L
26000miles

What do you plan to do? Has anyone expressed their dissappointment to BMW. I work for Jaguar, I know all manufacturers do long durability tests, curb strikes etc., and all suspension and body components bar consumable should last well into 100000 miles and 10 years. Something isn't right - BMW are one of the good manufacturers after all. Still love the car though!!!!

I had a feeling it had gone but had no strange noises, it just sat a little low and after getting 2 new tyres today confirmed it was broken. Went to sytner and it's gettin repaired Tuesday under warranty.

Two more confirmed broken today during MOT.
2003 3.0i
Both rears.

No noise, clunks, etc.
Will in due course photograph them when I know where they broke, but assume very top end of final coil

Updated

We have listed over 85 members cars that have had one or both springs break, surely BMW know about this design fault as i belive the issue was also present on the 3 series too.

I have a feeling that BMW will just put this down to wear and tear.

k3ab, print this topic and take it in just to see what the service manager says.

When i asked was this due to the suspension and RFT's i was told it was also common on the E46.
