Remove fuel filler flap BMW Z4 E85 2007

Post by jsn » Sat Oct 26, 2013 8:50 pm

Hi guys,

My filler cap has become loose. I can probably pick one up for relatively cheap but I'm worried I may get stung on labour. Does anyone know how easy it is to remove, repair the spring that makes it open and close securely, then place back on?

It currently opens and closes but its just a bit loose (it feels like the top of the hinge is securely in place but the bottom of the hinge has come out of place)

Thanks

I'm not near my Z at the moment, but the door slides off from the hinge with little effort. The hinge is a little more complex. Not sure what is involved.

Success!

I bought a new fuel filler pot unit from BMW for £37 and got a mechanic to fit it for £10!

BMW were quoting me £180 for this 10 minute job!

Here's the problem. There really is no hinge, it's just a cheap BMW spring that pops off.

It's a fairly easy DIY. The fuel cover door slides off to the rear. Remove the single screw.

Remove the fuel cap. (Breathing the fumes for a couple of minutes will speed the process) Gently rotate the rubber splash guard over the filler. You'll need to replace the cap to remain conscious.

The spring should be laying in the forward portion of the fuel compartment.

It's pretty simple to figure out how the spring reattaches to the top of the unit. I used a few drops of Rhino glue to make it more secure.

Reassembling is much easier. Just make sure that the bayonet for locking is lined up correctly. It's best to remove the plastic grommet and reinsert after the bayonet is aligned. Reinstall the single screw. Slide the fuel door back on. Check that the passenger/drivers door clears the fuel door when open. There you have it.

Sorry to bump this up

I am trying to rotate the rubber splash guard clockwise over but it is getting caught. I only get about 1cm of play

Am I supposed to push the locking pin as far back? Don't want to break any brittle plastic so any advice would be much appreciated
