Retrofit kit passenger airbag shutoff.

Post by dmsmith341 » Sat May 11, 2013 11:45 am

I've been trying to get a Retrofit kit passenger airbag shutoff, for my 2004, Z4, but unfortunately BMW have stopped making this part. The old part number was -61310411229. Does anyone have any ideas to where I may get one. I have a 3 year old daughter and I need to be able to shut off the passenger airbag for her to be able to travel in the car. I was thinking of trying to get a second hand passenger airbag shutoff system from a breakers yard and get it fitted, but not sure this is feasible. All suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Same here - so I would be very interested in suggestions, although I am currently doing the seat back as far as possible thing, and I think having a proper child seat rather than just a booster helps.

I believe obtaining a switch from the breakers is a feasible option. I'm not totally sure if the wiring is available or not in all vehicles, but the proper pins on the control unit are certainly available. Posts from other members questioning unconnected wires behind the air vent make me think wiring is in place. It should be feasible to construct the needed wiring if it is not already in place. To be clear, I do not know for sure if this will work, I have no knowledge of a successful retrofit. I only believe it to be possible in theory from my investigations with the BMW Wiring Diagram System (WDS).

Since my car came with this option from the factory, I'm not sure if the indicator light on the centre console is standard on all vehicles or not, as it also indicates seat mat status. If not in place, this part should be obtained as well. The same thoughts with wiring applies to this as well. It's probably feasible to have a functioning disable switch without this, but I think it's important to have visual confirmation that the airbag is indeed disabled.

Even though this only involves standard automotive wiring, since it is directly related to the airbag system, this sort of work should only be undertaken by someone well experienced in automotive wiring and occupancy protection systems work.

Shut off kit is discontinued.

Order parts by their individual part no.s and you will be able to get them all except for the instructions and the sticker.

61 12 0 411 235 wiring

61 31 6 954 788 airbag off light

61 31 6 974 643 key swith for airbag shut off

all 3 should be under £100 and will be 7 to 10 days according to my dealer but may be sooner.

i have booked my car in with a local independent BMW specialist who will fit for me .

Hope this helps

Great finding - I was told that there's no way to retrofit it on new parts.

They say in the PDF that the wiring should be already there - is it or is it not present in post-facelift cars?

My car is in with the technician and i have supplied him with the 3 parts - if you buy the 3 parts listed above that will be enough....... the 'airbag off ' warning light, the key turn switch that fits in the end of the dash and the wiring , part no 61 12 0 411 235

You will also need the fitter to drill a hole in the centre console for the airbag light to fit into.

That's it, I have just collected my parts from the dealer this morning and will drop them off on Monday for fitting. So they definitely are available

Retrofit kit passenger airbag shutoff.

Kicking this post back into life.

I am going to get the parts for this retrofit off a BMW z4 that is in a breakers yard.

Might try and do a very quick walk through once I have the parts in my hands.

Remember that if you buy a used airbag switch you’ll need the matching key too. Only on more recent BMWs can you turn the airbag switch without a correctly coded key.

Mmm, this does pose a problem. As the donor car does not have keys. :(

Correct me if I am wrong. But the Unit that controls the airbag. The safety control module or whatever it is called, is already in place and the switch unit plugs into that. Is the switch unit somehow smart, reading the key?

the donor car is a 2.5 Z4 2004 going into a 3.0 Z4 2004

I was going to replace the barrel with a barrel matched to my key or any key for that matter.

Any extra info would be super helpful!
