Roof lining clips/fixing broken - interior sagging

Post by Mr_Blue_Sky » Sun Oct 21, 2012 3:36 pm

Hi

Noticed today that the roof lining nearest the window is sagging, and is catching slightly on headrest when opening and closing. I peered inside and can see that the plastic bar that is screwed to the upper lining has broken, as per pics below (you can see the screw and the plastic that is split):

Screw that is supposed to hold lining in place:

Plastic that is split, and not being held in place by screw (you can see split above hole):

Now what do I do here? Do I attempt a superglue fix, or is there a part that and Indy could fix? Advise please!

The roof lining on mine dropped an inch near the back windows after a huge pothole. It was supported by clips so just forcefully pressed it into place.

I think the plastic split is just that bit too wide to prevent it staying securely in. I think superglue and patience is the only way to fix this.

Mine is like this. Someone on here drilled anther small hole in the plastic, removed the screw and used a cable tie to re-join the bits. Seemed to work a treat, keep meaning to do it with mine. That said, srhutch reckons there is a BMW repair kit you can get from the stealers, but I keep forgetting to ask them when I pass. Theme developing here

Good old Darren Wood Indy's, while they were fixing my door membrane repair, they fixed up 3 of the 6 screws that were bust, and told me how to do the rest if they need it (half open roof, unclip front trim, unhook inner headlining and thus the screws are easy to get to, and can be repaired as needed). So grateful for a Indy with morals.... :D

I'm not sure about replacing the headlining but if you want to repair the fixing as above you can part open the roof and take apart the front part of the roof to get in.

Someplace there’s a thread on this. I fixed mine by opening up the front part of the top ( half a dozen screws, including two semi hidden on the side of the plastic front thing) and drilling new holes through the snapped off ends and re-screwing the end pieces to the middle roof rib. Super easy, no gluing or messing with cable ties. Once you get that front plastic cover off, you’ll see what needs to be done. The only tricky part is not dropping the two flathead torx screws on the sidesof the plastic cover. The roof has to be partway up to access them. Wish I had taken pics, it was so easy and obvious.

Thread resurrection

I had a bunch of broken pieces and it looked like someone had tried a repair before...

I used superglue to close the splits, but also used superglued tape to reinforce the join

I then filled the holes with epoxy - I really didn’t want to have to do this again

Then redrilled holes slightly to the side of the originals and reattached to the bow.

Good as new (I hope)

Hope the pics can help other people visualise what’s involved in this fix. Many thanks to everyone who posted before as this thread is what inspired me and gave me confidence to tear the roof liner apart

Hello fellow Z lovers,
Is there a DIY somewhere that includes a "how to" for taking the headliner loose from the front area?
I recently replaced my top and the new tops headliner got ripped at the rear corners (due to sagging?)
It could have been from snagging the metal body from the rear trim not being in place when I tried out the new tops functionality.
When opening and closing I noticed it was bunching up at the rollbars but caught it and adjusted it most of the times. Most!
I just want to somewhat repair the rip or install a new one if either is not an incredibly difficult task.
Thanks for any help.
