'Clunky' doors

Post by GazDerby » Wed Aug 01, 2012 10:13 pm

I've only had my Z for a week but I've noticed that both doors are a little 'clunky' / noisy / metalic when closed. It is difficult to describe but quite un-BMW like.

Is this normal?
I'm wondering if they have dropped a little and they aren't quite fitting properly or a part of th lock is hitting the ring lock on the body.

There's nothing obvious in terms of gaps or any damage.
Both doors are the same.

Just to be clear guys, I'm talking about when I close the doors, not road noise when driving.....is this what you were referring to?
The doors sound like I'm shutting the door on an austin mini or healey..

Pre facelift cars had poor sound insulation on the doors. They all sound like that. It was fixed in the 2006+++ models

OK folks....thank you again....

Has anyone tried putting felt around the sill or inner door or owt like that to dampen the closing?

Removing the door car and using sound insulation is the best bet...

Ha ha - when I was Zed hunting I remember the first one I looked at and when I shut the door it sounded like kicking an empty oil drum with steelys on! I was convinced there was something seriously wrong with it. By the third car I looked at I realised it was normal.

The answer is simple - close the door more gently, there is a knack to it but once you master it you can shut the door without it sounding so cack. It will however continue to annoy you when every passenger you ever have gets out and shuts the door with what seems like a slam.

Precisely what have people used to soundproof their doors? Facelift spec insulation? Tried doing a search but couldn't find a definitive answer...

Did mine this summer with Terodem self-adhesive anti-droneboards. Works like a charm: clunkiness all gone now.

So true 8)

I'm planning to do the sound deadening as my next project and am looking at a product called "Dynamat". Car audio places sell it but it is quite expensive. As others have said there is a lot of discussion about this and the best guide is here.

Apparently there is a BMW product as fitted to later models, part number 51481923969 (not pictured but listed). At less than $10 it seems a bit too cheap compared to say Dynamat? I'd want to know it was going to make a significant difference before I went to all the work of fitting it!

BMW part is so small it barely does anything ... I would go for Terodem / Dynamat or some adhesive roof (I mean for a house) material.
