Steering wheel started to keep odd noise

Hi,

I have 2004 3.0i Z4 roadster and it's been really nice car to own. BUT... now the steering wheel started to keep strange noise.
Whenever I turn the steeringwheel 90 degrees counterclockwise, I can hear quite loud "screeech" and "click" noises. Doesn't matter how many turns I rotate the steeringwheel, the noise is there in every turn. And at the same excact spot. I can feel the click in my hands.

Could it be the slip ring? Or is there something else which could keep that noise? Apparently I have to remove the steeringwheel to check it out.
Other than that irritating noise, the steering is flawless and spot on. What to do? Wrap it around an lamppost or burn it? :fuelfire:

Thanks,

Sami

Hi, If you are sure the noise is coming from the steering column or steering wheel have a read of the below link from our friends at bimmerforums.
Lubricating the column and two bottom universal joints cured a squeak/groan on my 2003 model, I didn't need to do the top slip ring. Also be aware that noises can carry up the steering from the suspension and brakes as well, have a search here on Z4-Forum and you should find more information on these issues.

Clicking from behind the steering wheel that is reliably reproducible at the same point and direction of wheel rotation is likely secondary to a worn connector between the steering wheel electronics and the loom on the column.

Yep a dry groan, but not quite the full fog horn effect on that clip! I didn't need to do the slip ring (or start drilling the column case to lube the inners as mentioned in the link) but the the two lower UJ's under the bonnet and some lube up in to the bottom of the column, again from underneath. Mine only groaned it when it had been put away wet and left for a week which is what convinced me it was down to externally exposed components.

Mine does this quite randomly!!! I know it’s an older thread but can some point me in the direction (idiots guide) of what to lubricate? Thanks
