Carver amp vs Redstar problem.

I have a problem somewhat similar to the one sk93 had (has?), namely my amp (Carver DSP) was flooded and badly corroded. The head unit came on but there was absolutely no output (no surprise given the above, right?) Since the Carver's are getting hard to find, I replaced it with a Lear Redstar DSP which is supposedly compatible. Now I get some output from the head unit, but it's very low and there is no volume control at all. (I've only had the car a month, so I'm quite new to BMW.) sk93 said something about coding. What is that, a process or diagnostic display? If a process, how is it done? Or do I have a completely different problem. And, I don't see dates on these posts so I have no idea how long ago he (sk93) had those problems.
