Hose eaten by rodents(?)

Post by saseinlinie » Fri Jul 23, 2021 4:05 pm

Hi all,
I just noticed the hose(insulation?) in the attached pics was eaten by probably some (now)fat mouse..
Does anyone know what this hose is, how easy it is to change, can I do it myself, part number, etc., anything really..
Car drives fine...but not sure if ok to keep driving it...
Thanks a lot.

Looks like the crankcase vent system pipe running from the cam cover at the rear to the CCV unit, they have feasted on the insulation is the plastic pipe underneath it damaged in any way? Also what model and year is your car, we can look up the part number with that info.
From the date on the pipe I surmise its a 2005 E86 3.0l car, if it is here is the parts diagram, item 3 is your nibbled hose

Looks like an n52 engine, so a 2006/2007 car (early silver engine cover variety)

Sorry yes it is a 2006 N52, 3.0si
To me it looks like only the soft insulation part is eaten...so should be ok to still drive right ? As mentioned car feels fine..
Based on the diagram from colb, it looks like there is a similar insulated hose I need to check for signs of mouse gourmet, is that one easily visible ?
Thanks guys..

Don’t bother replacing until you are sure the mouse is gone!

We had a simiar problem with a 2 series when we lived in Luxembourg when rodents made a meal of the insulation on the underside of the bonnet. It was apparently caused by Pine Martens. They are common in mainland Europe but less so in the UK. Further info here: https://www.letseatcake.com/marten-protection/
