Oil Filter Housing, Pressure Relief Valve

Post by MDBZ4 » Tue Jul 13, 2021 2:39 pm

I have a really bad chirping type of noise that is coming from my oil filter housing and have been reliably informed that it is the pressure relief valve. This part is an integral component of the oil filter housing and cannot be fitted separately. Could someone please confirm that this is the case and if so where is the best place to purchase a used oil filter housing. TIA Mark

Can't see any mention of one.

You don't say what car or engine you have though.

There is a pressure relief valve on the oil pump though.

Most oil filter housings have an internal valve that prevents the oil to flow back in the sump.
To keep oil pressue on the system for the next start.
A non return valve. I think he means that.

That would probably give an check engine light.

The TS says he's 'reliably informed', but without knowing how it was diagnosed the word reliably is of course not very reliable

I'm not sure there is one on the M54 as the oil filer is not the canister type.

I also had the split intake pipe (the small pipe had gone totally and the corrugated on was split all round), it only very occasionally brought the light on, changing it improved the MPG by nearly 7 miles per gallon though!

I am...
For the m54 here is even an aftermarket repair solution (no experience with that one though)

Check the oil filter itself for pleats that have collapsed. If they collapse they make a high pitch squeal. There are videos of this on YouTube.

I didn't place a link for the product.
I just mentioned it, that there is one for an m54 engine
But as you haven't specified your engine, I'm not going to place links to products that might not fit.
I'm sure you can google it for your specific engine, if there is one available, whatever your engine might be.
Take into account that there might be more than one valve in an oil filter housing. I'm sure that the guy who diagnosed your problem can tell you more about that as he diagnosed the problem. Not all of those valves might be replaceable.

What year?
Or, better said: pre facelift or post facelift?
