I'm going insane. DISA Valve trouble.

Post by Peanut0423 » Tue Jun 22, 2021 1:52 am

Hi. 2003 2.5 here. So to start I bought a Rein DISA Valve and installed it without a hitch. Then a while into driving I start hearing this ringing noise like eeeeeeeeeeeee. So after I get home I open my hood and notice it's coming from the DISA/Intake area. I look around and see the intake boot is ripped so I sigh in relief and replace it. Only it didn't solve anything. I still hear that ringing noise. Only when I'm idle or slowing down. When I accelerate it basically goes away. I open my hood to go to check the DISA Valve and when I unplugged it, the noise stopped. So boom I think it's a defective part so I go to take it off only problem is that the bottom screw is STRIPPED. I look up and find out that I can use a speedout screw extractor but that only made it WORSE. Now I have this weird screw that nothing fits and can't get it out. That ringing noise is driving me insane and this fun car that I love is becoming embarrassing to own. IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO HELP PLEASE LET ME KNOW

Looks like your going to have to drill the head of the bolt off. I replaced my DISA but don’t recall if there is room to get a drill into that area.

Some how you need to drill or remove the head of the bolt. A carbide burr on a Dremel perhaps. Anyway once the bolt head is gone and you remove the top bolt, you can remove the DISA at that point you can remove the threaded portion of the bolt with a pair of needle nose pliers.

Try drilling it out with a left handed drill bit. Sometimes the drill will catch enough to pull the screw out.
Alternatively, try to cut a slot across the top of the head of the bolt in order to get a flat-head screwdriver in it.

Thats annoying. I am not familiar with Rein. Is it a rebuild kit or a cheap ebay DISA. You could have the wrong DISA fitted as they are not the same across the range. Obviously that damaged bolt is not the cause of the problem but good luck getting it out. Dont recall enough room to make a slot so you can unscvrew it so looks like a dremel or similar to grind away to release the tension to remove the unit. Then I would check exactly what unit you have purchased.

Hi Peanut0423. I reckon if you remove the air filter box, MAF and intake boot then you will probably have enough access/room to get a drill in and drill the head off that bolt. A pair of ViseGrips will easily twist the remaining part of the bolt out once you have removed the actual DISA valve. The 2 original bolts that secure the DISA valve are quite shallow Tork pan heads. I replaced mine with deeper hex cap heads similar to this

Update: I drilled around the plastic surrounding the screw, ripped it off, then used a wrench to loosing the screw and take it. Put in the old DISA and boom NO NOISE. So the new one is definitely either defective or not the right fitment. The new one is broken around the area the screw goes into so I'm not sure if they're replace it or refund my money at all, but I'm honestly just so happy I got the damn thing out. Thank ya'll so much. :D

The DISA operates via a vacuum on a diaphragm - so maybe there's a leak on the new one hence its making the "eee"/whistling sound? You should be able to test this easily by engaging the arm by hand, and then holding your finger over the vent hole at the back. If it has no suction or leaks, then that's probably the culprit.

Why did you get a new DISA? Was it due to the commonly worn bushings/flaps?

If your current one is working fine, but the flaps a bit hows-it-going, you can easily transfer the new bits into the old casing. Though I do recommend you do the upgrade kit with aluminium everything if you're going through the trouble.
