Useless ebay 3rd brake lights

Post by CryptoWhale » Mon Jun 14, 2021 6:59 am

Just a word of warning, I bought one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-BMW-Z4-E ... 890.l49286 (which I was recommended on here) and this morning when closing the boot the plastic part fell off. :headbang:

I've spent over 2 grand on my car since January and it's just problem after problem :headbang: I suppose this is a lesson not to cheap out on parts though.

Is it worth me glueing this back on and if so what would the best way to do this be and what product?

Key and clean all mating surfaces, epoxy and clamp it for a day.
Or buy a ‘proper’ cheap copy which replicates the original design where that red piece has tabs that reach into the light housing making it a lot more secure.

I stuck my lense on about 5 years ago with some JB Weld Clear Silicone RTV and it's still watertight and stuck fast now.

My experience of superglue or epoxy etc is that eventually they go hard and brittle and fail. Silicone RTV is 'rubbery' and probably copes better with shock and temperature change as well as being waterproof. Get it in black and grey also for various jobs around your car..it will literally stick most things to almost anything else and it can be removed with a blade and some gentle persuasion if required. My drivers wing mirror glass is secured with it and still heats up, the velcro strips on the drivers carpet are held on with it and if you slather it generously around the convoluted rubber pipe on the inlet boot it prolongs its life before it perishes

The aftermarket one I tried didn't fit. The genuine one was better, but took time to form to the shape of the recess and I had to screw it right down - which isn't recommended.

Not the best design.
