Seat back popping off - help please
I had something similar happen to my old seats. I found the lower plastic bit that holds it in place was a e loose that created enough movement for the top to drop out like yours.
I found replacing the lower pins did the job. You may also find the seat back lower has some movement.

I had this issue, I gave up and put the seat back under my bed. Weight saving right?

snapped lower pin on mine. as above, the seat back had enough vertical movement to move down so far the top clips came undone too.
Actually think i solved it with a couple of cable ties at the bottom of the seat back to hold it up.

I recall getting the old pins off the bottom of the chair was a right faff (that was with the seats out) and I ended up cutting them off (I'm sure there is a more refined approach).

Total pita . My drivers side seat back has been falling off ever since I bought the car. The holes at the bottom of the back where the pins go have split so I've tried pins with larger washers & bolts with large washers to try & hold it up. All attempts have failed over time as the very bottom edge of the seat back has weakened so it bends easily allowing the back to drop.
My latest attempt was to wrap the side & top hooks with heavy duty acrylic double sided tape & run a couple of strips of it down the sides & across the top of the seat back. I've not bothered with any support at the bottom & for now, about a month in, it's still holding .

Since the backs are nothing more than steamed wood fibers over the years they sag at the bottom attach points which allows the top clips to come unhooked from the seat and then they fall off. I removed mine and repaired it with fiberglass resin and cloth. I'm amazed that these weren't made of plastic like the rest of the interior!

Seat back popping off - help please
When I fixed the seat backs that kept falling off some SE seats I discovered the two holes in the bottom lip were split open, so the plugs would pop out of them and allow the seat back to become loose; and it was very difficult to re-locate the clips properly on each side of the seat back.
Fixed the holes at the bottom by applying a section of thin hardboard sheet with evostick, with a corresponding drilled hole - plug was nice and secure and stayed within the hole.
I noticed there was a lot of foam padding on the seat itself around the area where the side clips locate - cut this back slightly to make location of the clips easier.
Both of these resulted in two seat backs that easily fell in to place and remained there afterwards.
