Coolant loss but tank ok ???

Post by blunderthumbs » Sat May 01, 2021 10:49 am

Ok here goes. I started my Zed up a few days ago and got the coolant warning light on the dash. Checked the level and the tank was empty also coolant in the under tray directly beneath the coolant tank. Took it to my trusted Indi BMW specialists who have done a pressure test on it and checked all the hoses and clips this morning. Just got the call to say they can't find anything wrong with it. There was definitely coolant under the right side of the radiator so how has it got there :? Garage said that I should keep my eye on things and wait for something to develop. Not an ideal situation but what can I do ?. I'm a bit nervous about driving it :(
Has anyone had a similar problem with their Zed ?

Similar issue, had low coolant light come on during trip over Brecon Beacons checked when cool at Brecon and looked fine. Checked again when home and level had dropped so topped up to level with a litre of coolant. There was a small amount on tray so ran til hot but no obvious leak from anywhere. Taken on a few trips now with level remaining OK.
Looks like just going to have to just keep an eye on it until leak shows itself.

hi. Two years ago i had a green puddle underneath the car and thought that the expansion tank had split so ordered a replacement but....it wasn't coolant on the floor it was the green screen wash from a split in the screen wash tank :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: found out when i topped it up

How hot was it when they pressure tested it?
I believe from previous discussions that it's not just the pressure of the coolant that makes it leak, but the fact that the hot water causes hairline cracks in the tank to open up.

100% correct, clean the expansion tank, drive the car, rev it up before you turn off and if you still don't see any wisps of steam wipe it with a tissue to see if it's wet lower down.
