Black soot coming out of exhaust

Rachel!!!! wrote: Fri May 28, 2021 8:31 pm Sorry for the delay it's been a busy week.

I spoke to a bmw specialist last Friday, he suggested that if the soot on the bumper is watery and not oily it could just be a condensation issue. He said once condensation has built up from short journeys it's then very difficult to get rid of.

The disa valve was missing the pin and stuck in the open position, this has now been replaced. The mechanic said to change this and see if there was any improvement and go from there as he said it could solve the problem. I'd already ordered the part and my friend did this along with an oil and filter change which has stopped the noise on the oil filter. The noise was only present when revving the engine not at idle.

The oil from the filler cap couldn't be seen until we took the engine cover off. I'm going to check it again tomorrow to see if any has come back since the oil change.

So at the minute it's still up in the air. But I will update again as and when I get anywhere.

Thanks for the offer of help, that's much appreciated, I will be in touch if needed. I was thinking of getting a mechanic onto the job if it is the ccv as it seems like quite a big job taking everything apart to get to it.
Short journeys don’t explain the disa valve covered in oil, it’s still a ccv issue imho.

Black soot coming out of exhaust

Quick update for anyone following this.

There's been no more leaking from the oil filler cap and so far so good with the soot on the bumper. Since washing the car last Thursday there hasn't been any reappear. The car has been used much more over the last month including longer journeys. I'm obviously going to keep my eye on everything but🤞

Good news.
Hopefully then it was just down to lack of enough miles to warm it through properly, which would explain why it was quite watery.
Fingers crossed it remains that way.
On the plus side, you've learned a bit about the engine while you've been investigating this.

Thought I'd just restart this thread as I was wondering if Rachel ever got the car sorted properly?

I am also interested! :) As my problem (I had similar) went away with the Liqui Moly oil cleaner/engine flush and new oil. I also switched from 5W40 to 5W30 ( Liqui Moly Special Tec LL 5W-30 )

Did you not get to sort her out in the end?

Excuse me???
Well I did a few checks for her, as suggested by Colb, but quickly got to the limit of my diagnostic abilities.
I do think it may have been down to mostly short trips and not warming up properly, but having not heard anything since the 'see how it goes' message, I was interested to know if it's still ok.
