Indicator stalk/switch failed or something else?

I've been out in the Zed today for only the second time this year, roof down, fantastic :driving: . She's been SORN'd for 6 months but serviced & MOT'd on March 8th with no issues except a blown rear number plate lamp.
Anyway, after a lovely drive (back from the dentist ) I indicated to turn into our road & got nothing from the indicators (yes I do use the indicators all the time even though I'm a BMW owner  ). They've been fine all day & have never shown any fault previously.
So, I pulled up on the drive & did some checks:
Indicators not working, main beam not working, hazards not working, no flash from indicators when locking/unlocking.
Everything else seems to working fine & there are no warning lights on the dash. I've checked the fuse nos. 14, 23, 59 & 60 associated with the lights & they're all good. Also checked for codes but there are non.

Anyone had this before? It sounds like a failed indicator stalk to me but would that also cause the hazards not to work? Thanks in advance.

Dave

Do you have INPA?
Sounds like the Light Control Module has thrown a fit.
There are various tests you can run using INPA or ISTA. Firstly, checking if the module responds.

No just a basic code reader. The lights work fine even in auto where I usually leave the LCM switch. Funny you should mention the LCM though as I blew mine up last year fitting a MFSW. I got hold of a replacement & had it coded to the car by a local BMW indy. Perhaps I need to book it back in with him? Good call .

Battery. Mine did exactly the same after being laid up for 2 months. A good long drive sorted it.

She's been on a CTek all the time she's been parked up so could it really be the battery? I'll happily go on a long drive once able to do so :driving: .

Well after nearly 6 years of ownership I've decided to put my 2005 E85 3.0i up for sale, really can't justify a company car, the G20 3 series and our E89. Over the last 12 months the E89 was our default zed, when you could actually get out and use one. That coupled to a potential move to the sticks and both of us now permanently working from home means a few cars need to go. With that in mind I had the MV2's its sporting recondition in Gloss Black over the last few days. They looks great and I don't want to sell it, but head over heart I will be putting it up for sale in the next few days! :|

Another for sale don't want to sell thread coming up!

I'm guessing you've mistakenly put this in the wrong section MACK? Sad to hear you're thinking of selling but I must admit it's been on my mind for the last few months too. 1300 miles in 2 years, hard to justify keeping her tbh  .

Update: Si, it seems you were right  . I had been on quite a decent run on the day of the problem so I sort of dismissed what you said. However I put her back on the CTek next day & only 2 of 7 lights came up telling me the battery was quite discharged. Anyway I locked her up & the indicators flashed as normal. Everything now working again as it should. New Bosch S5 008 Battery 12V 77Ah Type 096 ordered  .

Yup.... same as me matey. These cars seem super sensitive to bad batteries and show weird symptoms. It was doing my head in to find the solution to the same problem...

Glad it’s sorted.

Update :headbang: .

New battery fitted 10 days ago or so. Not had chance to get out in her until today. Went for a short spin & then across to my mother's place, about 10 miles. Nearly there & no bloody indicators again  . So that rules out the battery.
I'll have to book it in at BMWMAN tomorrow & see if he can find anything.
Not looking forward to my drive back home

Could the alternator be knackered and the battery discharged each time it’s driven?

Well it did go through my mind but wouldn't I have a light on the dash to indicate failed alternator? Is there an easy way to check it with a multimeter?

A further update: After half an hour at my mother's the fault was still present (no flash of indicators when unlocking) but when I came to go home they started working again. 2 miles down the road & back to no indicators. Also noticed that my lights were on & couldn't be switched off using the switch which points to I think to LCM trouble as Jfgoldfish indicated :( .
