I realise Hackney to Hook is a fair distance for you, but I'd say going from recommendations on this forum, it is well worth the trip.

Z4 2004 Roof not working-orange light

I did a roof motor repair this morning and had something very similar with an orange light.
Chap had recently had new rear shocks fitted and the parcel shelf wasn’t fitted back properly. No sign of the shelf retaining clips and many of the pop studs removed in those areas not put back.

He said it had rattled a lot since the work was done and that was why. Shelf not clipped in securely and canvas strip not fitted back to the shelf edge.

Motor now revived, relocated to the boot and all missing bits replaced. All working sweetly now.

However, whilst I could sort it, I’m in Bristol, so go to Ross at RBM and you’ll be in good hands

Degsy, this is the micro switch, the important part circled in red. Note, my shelf is in the up position, therefore the switch has not been activated to allow the roof to work. Looking in the boot, it’s located on the wall in front of you, sort of behind the cabin. You will need to bend down and look up a little. Get someone to push down on the silver tab, to the left so that it’s hardly visible, while they do this you try the roof button.

If your switch is broken, fitting a new one is a matter of undoing those two screws, pulling the plastic cover off, unplugging the old switch, plugging in the new one and refitting the cover. The hardest part is bending into the boot, I’m old and tall, it’s not easy these days.

They’ve probably broken it off removing the shelf

That sounds like a sh1t job done by that garage fitting the shocks when it came to putting the shelf back together, it really needs those retaining clips put back so it gets clipped in correctly for it to rise and fall properly and operate that switch correctly. I would be going back and giving some grief to their service manager if they have one and never use them again.

When checking, make sure your shelf is in the upper position. As Number5 said. If you can’t see the silver tab, it’s probably broken off. Order a new one a fit it.

Can you see the plastic cover but not the tab/prong?

Maybe they didn’t even put the plastic tab holding the microswitch back on. What do you have in the centre of the boot under the roof tray (looking towards the cabin from the back of the car) degsy005? That’s the area Lance’s picture is looking at.

Hi everyone,

thanks for your replies

I think the Garage broke the Microswitch, fortunately one of the Forum Members is going to fix it for me and I'll have the Shocks looked at by a better Garage.
You live and learn!
Apart from that the car is in great condition.
