EML letters on after EML light been on

Post by Kimani » Mon Dec 14, 2020 1:02 pm

Hi guys
I had my cam done around 6k miles ago and few thousands mile down the line, the EML came on. I was instructed the car needed a catalyst sensor or something like that but as it didn’t affect the drive, I kept on driving adding more miles and the light seems to come and go now and then.
As I was driving this morning up A1m, I saw a Mazda mx5 on my tail, I knew I wasn’t going to lose this battle and after 2-3 miles of slightly heavy foot on the pedal, the letters EML came on next to the EML itself. Does anyone know what could be the issue? The car still drives and i completed the journey but worried if I should drive it again down the motorway.
Thanks all.

Didn’t you already say you need a catalyst sensor? :?

Needs a code reader putting on to see whats been set, bear in mind whoever read the codes the first time may not have cleared the codes from that occassion. Best read them and note them down, clear them and run the car to see if any come back. When cleared the EML lights should go off, they will return if the faults are still present.

Yes does need the Catalyst converter but ignoring that for now as MOT is 8 months away, still driving perfectly. I was only worried Letters EML on the dash meant it would die on me anytime. Done 350 miles with the lights on so far and love every mile on this car.

And yes it’s the 2.0L

Jesus.. Driving with an eml light on your playing Russian roulette with your car regardless of how well its driving.. Yes it may very well be something simple and cause no harm.. On the other hand you may be only the next drive away from a catastrophic failure.. Get the thing diagnosed and find out what the actual fault is, without a fault code nobody is going to be able to advise you properly
if its got tits or tyres..its trouble :D

In general the above is correct and you would certainly be feeling uneasy driving around with the Engine Management Light permanently lit. However, this is the 2.0l and we know EML issues are extremely common on that engine, which always seem to be emissions related and don't have any significant impacts. If the OP says it needs a new cat, I think we have the answer right there.

A lot of people never get to the bottom of it and run their cars for a long time like that. Until MOT time comes of course.
