Steering Wheel Alignment?

Post by longshaw » Mon Aug 10, 2020 1:18 pm

Hi All,

I have just had a 4 wheel alignment, the car runs perfectly on the flat

However the steering wheel is now offset ~5 degrees clockwise. and driving me mental :driving:

Any though how to correct the steering wheel? (Or any other suggestions)

They haven't tracked it correctly - the steering wheel is centered by two pins so it can't be moved, its your fixed point of reference when doing alignment. Take it back to the place that did it.

I agree.
I have had this problem before on another car.
Take it back before they forget they did the work!

Out of interest, how much did a 4 wheel alignment set you back?

That's cheap. Pay peanuts, get monkeys...
Maybe just write it off and take it where they know how to do it properly. I went to Drury Lane Auto in Oldham. Plenty of motorsport knowledge and they seemed pretty clued up.

Wow, thats crazy cheap.
That is what I pay the local tyre shop just for a front toe adjustment.

I would still take it back for them to correct the front toe. That is a very simple task that they shouldn't have gotten wrong in the first instance.

I'm with Sidewaze Samm. If they couldn't get something that basic right, I'd not go near the place again.
Even if they got the steering wheel straight, would you ever be confident everything was as it should be?

Its 35 quid lost, but maybe take advice from other members local to you and find a reputable place that will do it properly and give you printed evidence of the before and after.

Basically they made all the toe adjustments from one side. The wheel is supposed to be centered first and toe adjusted appropriately from both sides.

Is this where you went? https://www.nortonstyres.co.uk/wheel-alignment-tracking
No mention of 4-wheel alignment on their site that I can see. The only mention of alignment I can find is a cursory description of front wheel tracking.
Did they tell you it was 4-wheel alignment? What rig did they have - again no mention on their site of Hunter or other professional gear. They seem to focus on their mobile fitting service...
As I mentioned above, I went to Drury Auto in Oldham along with my son. They did both our zeds and we're both very happy - it was well worth the trip from the other side of Manchester.
Just put it down to experience and get the job sorted properly.

I'm pretty close to Oldham, and 10mins from Drury Auto. Is this the one you recommend?

It is a shame you have lost your money, but at least it proves, yet again, the worth of talking to people on this forum................... if the advice is heeded, which you seem to be doing.
Hope it all gets sorted for you.

I was wrong when i said the steering wheel can't be moved, it can be but in this case its has been tracked incorrectly so there is no way you should be adjusting the wheel to compensate for it.

Yep. That's the place. They won't let you in the workshop to watch but you get the printouts, and are happy to give you explanations and answer queries.

Steering Wheel Alignment?

Took mine to Dury Lane Service, on the advice of other members, and I am glad I did. (Sidewaze Samm)
Printouts/reports before during and after were all given. Now all green and runs perfect alignment (to drive feels as good as it can get)
Some rust parts apparently and an ill fitted top cap was part of the reason for misalignment. It was replaced.
The *only* downside it was £324 (inc. vat) for the alignment, top can and labour.

I would *highly* recommend
