I never solved it on the 2.2 engine
The current 3.0 does it too
Lots been spoken about the z4 whistle
After making sure my intake boot was good I accepted that it wasn’t a failure approaching
I did read that it could be oil flow though the filter but I never concluded
Your doing it?

Yep, mine is doing it and I just changed the intake boot (the common failing one) today and it is still doing it. I doubled checked the entire intake system to make sure all hoses were home and well clamped.
I have also read about possible causes being oil filter, CCV, belts, DISA, VANOS. Not a short list of troubleshooting there!!
I was planning to do the DISA and VANOS "upgrades" soon anyway, so fingers crossed.

Yeah I changed mine about 6 months ago and went for the recommended Mann filter. Pretty good brand I thought? Haven't changed the filter housing gaskets, so might have something to do with that?
Its becoming such a mystery!!

Do you know what... I think I've solved mine (or it solved itself)!
Before my trip to Scotland I decided to get hold of another jubilee clip for the sound generator pipe that has been missing one since I bought the car. I fitted this, clamped it up tight and not heard the sound come back during the entire trip or since.
Obviously I'm not certain that this was the culprit but I changed nothing else and the sound went away. I'll keep listening out to see if it comes back.
