The manual gearboxes seem to be a bit variable.

My 1st 3.0Si was more notchy than my 2nd, which felt better still after an oil change and fitting a ZHP (but that may just have been wishful thinking).

But both were way better than the box in my E90 330i with the same engine, and presumably same gearbox. That just doesn't want to go into 1st sometimes. :(
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily

Yes and going quickly from 1st to 2nd in my Z4M really disappointed(annoyed) me. Strangely my manual E92 M3 didn't suffer as much doing the same thing though.

Agree with the others - CDV delete doesn't have anything to do with the gearbox or the notchy feeling but it does improve the shifting experience as a whole :D .

Had my z4 for 11 years and it’s on 132k now and it’s always had clunky first and second gear, just one of those things.

Apparently BMW got a job lot of gearboxes from Massey Ferguson and fitted them to all z4's!

I changed my gearbox mounts today as it was only £16 for the pair. I lubricated the selector whilst under there. It only took half an hour.

Gear changes are slick and precise. Huge improvement for very little effort. My old mounts were very soft. Worth a try and won't break the bank

Thanks, sounds like an easy and inexpensive job to do. Just checked RockAuto, the most expensive choice was only $7.29 USD each. They usually hit you up pretty good for shipping charges but still a cheap job.

What did you use to lube the selector? I’m thinking something like spray lithium grease...or ?

Spray lithium as you said so it does not attack plastic washers
