The curse of the squealing drama llama!

Noticed this noise pulling into the driveway yesterday and immediately remembered a similar post on here a few months back about the oil filter.

On lifting the bonnet it does indeed seem to be coming from that area so next job is to change the filter out.

But does anybody know the exact reason for this!

I think most mechanics would be convinced it was a bearing too. But it’s definitely the filter.

Well, who'd have thought 🤔. Looks like you'll be changing the filter then in the first instance. Has it had a recent oil service? I wonder if it's actually the oil pump making the noise, struggling to force oil through a substandard filter?

Last oil change about 7 months ago. Always use Mann filters. Couldn’t get anything from Halfords for our cars so gonna have to order one online.

UPDATE: So my new MANN filter arrived today so I whipped the old one out to fit it. The old filter has been in around 6mths / 1,700 miles.

It sparked my memory that the last oil service pack order with Opie didn’t have the Mann filters in stock so I opted for the Bosch one.

Always had a pretty high opinion of the Bosch brand and have used their products a lot in the past.

Well... not anymore. Well not for oil filters at least. You can see from the image that a lot of the folds have collapsed and I guess the noise is these resonating together. Probably doesn’t cause any knock on effects but defo not great.

My recommendation from now on.. AVOID BOSCH OIL FILTERS.

This is the same collapsing I saw in the vid I linked you to above. I presume this happens because they're being compressed by the filter housing cap, which makes me think the filter is potentially too long. I don't suppose you measured the length of the new one and compared it to the (albeit squished) old one did you?

^ this :D . You wouldn't have thought it with a brand like Bosch would you? I'll stay clear of those  . Hopefully no harm done though  .

Anyway, you haven't said if the 'The curse of the squealing drama llama!' has finally been silenced :poke:

Absolutely, completely cured with the new filter. I didn’t measure each of the different brands unfortunately but they are specced the same on paper. I have a feeling it may be due to the inside diameter being a bit too tight on the Bosch. I seem to remember it being quite tight to get over the cage. Then as you screw the cap back on it perhaps twists and collapses.

The Mann filter slips over the cage with ease.
