Wet passenger carpet

Post by atreyu » Thu Jun 20, 2019 10:52 pm

Just wondering if there are any usual points where water can get in?

As we've had a lot of rain recently and then I washed the car the other evening, the passenger carpet is now soaking.

As above. 99% sure it's that. Get a new door membrane and some butyl tape. Should sort this for you.

If it's not that, some have said that the roof motor drain can overflow into the passenger foot well area.

As Ben suggested, the motor drain could be blocked and the well has filled and spilled over.

If you roll a bit of kitchen roll up into a sort of stick, you can gently probe about where the motor is, if it comes up soggy, there’s a water build up there. If full you should really be able to hear it sloshing about. Perhaps a hill, engine off and a passenger listening.

If the motor area has filled and overflowed, the carpet up behind the passenger seat back will be wet. If it's the door membrane, it's more likely that the water will be confined to the carpet in the floor area.

Cheers guys, I'd checked the original roof motor position when I did the ABS sensor recently so that's not blocked. I'll check out the door seal.

By door membrane do you mean behind the doorcard or the door seal itself? I forgot to look and then noticed this today!

Door membrane for sure. Remove the door card and all will become obvious.

Tell me about it, it wasn't like it the other day after I washed it! Just a damp carpet.

I lift share with my other half so it's been stood in the rain for a few days. I had the same problem on a Seat Leon which are known for leaking past the door card seal, it's a butyl rubber stick on seal. I guess the Z4 will be the same?

Had the same issue and turned out to be door membrane..or rather what was left of it! :headbang:
However, mine wasn't as bad as yours. Yours looks like someone forgot to pack a Tenalady and let rip!

Maybe some help to you:

If the scuttle area get full of leaves/crud I understand water can get in under the window seal and into the car. Its a good idea to clean out the area from time to time and run a line of sealant under the window. You will probably need a puller (very cheap) to get the wipers off. But as others have said start with door seal, then roof motor if its wet behind the passenger seat.
