Returning from a SORN

Post by jock156 » Mon Mar 18, 2019 4:43 pm

2006 2.0L on 88K has been dry garaged since the end of November with the handbrake off. I am going to put a new battery on it even though its been started up a few times over the winter months.

So other than not Revving the arse out of it on its first start up is there anything else I should be looking out for? Its garaged somewhere else not at home but I'm quite happy to sit for an hour or so to let everything get up to temp. and get the oil pressure etc back up and running through the veins again?

TIA

You might notice the tyres have flat spots if its not been moved at all. Check you levels and do what your going to do :)

Don't sit in it to warm it up. Check the battery. Check the tyre pressures. Roll it back a bit to check the brakes are free and take it for a gentle run to warm it up.

Start it and drive it gently - don't bother sitting on the drive, just get out on the road.
You did say you'd started the car while it was in hibernation - I would resist that temptation in future if possible, as all sorts of stuff is produced from cold and won't get burned off - with this in mind, an oil change wouldn't go amiss.

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

Thanks for the prompt responses!!!! All Oil/ coolants/ filters etc were replaced last summer. I know it has a tiny oil leak on the drivers side near the wheel. Any pointers?

That said, it will have no insurance, MOT or tax so a drive isn't feasible. MOT station is about 1/4 a mile away so when I'm ready I can tax/ insurance it and book it in for a MOT and drive to the garage.

Can you sniff the oil in order to identify the type?

No Tax is necessary if it's booked in for a test - anyway you can't get tax without a valid MOT.
