Slight steering vibration

Post by Sharpy1975 » Sat Mar 09, 2019 1:02 pm

ok, jacked the car up and checked all bushes. Everything seems nice and tight. As per the test at the garage on skid plates.

Now this is where it gets interesting. Bump stop has spit on top mount and when applying pressure there is definitely a knock and you can see the mount moving under the bonnet. The other side bump stop has broken away from the mount too.....could this cause steering issues?

Slight steering vibration

Bump stop split is quite common and cheap to replace.

If the top mount nuts don’t move when you wobble the shock, then it’s probably a worn top mount bearing or rubber (above pic).

This is a bump stop

Which has split/broken away ?
A damaged/missing bump stop will have no effect on steering. However, a split/broken top mount rubber is pretty serious and will need replacing asap

thanks for the replies.......no spilt on the top mount. The bump stop has split and there is play/knocking on the top mount.

Useful vid. Does look the rubber may be soft due to degradation, but it could be as straightforward as a loose top nut.

Have you removed the dust cap to see the condition of the rubber, bearing and top mount nut underneath?

Also... is that a crack in your strut towers I can see in the vid?!

Hey, nut and rubber look fine and no split that I can see in strut tower. There is movement and a knocking noise when allpying pressure as per the vid. Both sides the same, not sure if that's normally. I will get a clip with the dust cap off.
