Orange oil light

Post by WillieT » Sat Mar 02, 2019 8:51 pm

Hi Guys, Still loving every minute of my Z4! However on turning off the engine tonight an orange/yellow oil lamp light stayed on along with a short beep... I'm guessing this is because my engine oil is low? But wasn't sure as its yellow not red!... On that note what engine oil do you recommend? (mine is a 2008 2.0 litre).. Thanks in advance (I've attached another picture of my baby) :D

You should just need a top up your satisfy the orange light , my preference would be Millers but most any 5w 30 fully synth oil would be fine

As Mr wilks says, no worries. The Amber warning at ignition on and off is the first stage warning. Just needs a top up. :)

If you ignored it, it would come on solid and continuous after a while. Ignored that if your daft enough and you will eventually get a red,

Happily the ///M still has a dip stick.

No not me, the one in the engine bay. :P

With a drive like that don't top anything up until you've tried leaving it on a level surface for a while! Only top up if the +1L comes on.

From the manual:

The warning lamp lights up in yellow while you are driving. In addition, a signal sounds and "+1.0" appears in the
instrument cluster, refer to page 88.
The oil level is at the absolute minimum; refill as soon as possible. Do not drive more than
125 miles/200 km before refilling.
The warning lamp comes on in yellow after the engine is switched off. A signal also sounds.
Add engine oil at the earliest opportunity, e.g. when you stop to refuel.
The warning lamp lights up in yellow within 30 seconds after the engine is started: The oil level sensor is defec-
tive:
It is not possible to issue a current or accurate measurement. Have the system checked as soon as possible.

Checking the oil level
Your car is equipped with an electronic oil-level monitor.
For a precise measurement and display of the oil level, it is necessary that the engine be at operating temperature, i.e. after uninterrupted driving for at least approx. 6.5 miles/10 km. You can have the oil level displayed while you are driving, or while the vehicle is at a standstill on a level surface and the engine is running.
You can have the oil level reading displayed in the instrument cluster.
Possible displays

Press button 1. The oil level is checked and dis- played for approx. 15 seconds.
To exit the display sooner, press button 1 again.
1 Oil level OK
2 Oil level is being checked.
This can take about 3 minutes if the car is at a standstill on a level surface, or about
5 minutes while the car is on the move.
3 Oil level down to minimum:
Add 1 US quart/1 liter of engine oil as soon as possible, refer also to Adding engine oil.
4 Oil level is too high.
Have the vehicle checked immedi-
ately, as excessive oil can damage the engine.<
5 The oil level sensor is defective:
it is not possible to issue a current or accu- rate measurement.
Do not add engine oil. You can continue your journey. Have the system checked as soon as possible.[/i]

OP - as others have mentioned, the purpose of the orange oil light + beep after cutting the ignition is to indicate that the engine oil needs topping up.

However, you may find that you top up your oil and then are faced with the same light a week later. If this occurs, then you either have an oil leak or your engine is burning oil.

So I recommend that you check for oil leaks when you do your top up.

The 2.0 loves a drop of oil! I've seen it recommended to keep it topped up as the vanos is driven by the oil pressure.
