Sounds like BS to me... that's not going to make them 5x the cash for the same amount of work, is it?

I had the same issue last year. 4 months of research and this ended up being my only option. Hard to swallow, but is what it is I guess.

Ecu died because the top was left down in heavy rain. Bought a second hand ecu for £50 but couldn't find anywhere that could code it. Tried crash data, tried two independents one of which was a BMW specialist and then finally the dealership. None were able to overwrite the coding.

Is the ecu the one that is in the centre console? The control module?

mac27040 wrote: Fri Feb 22, 2019 11:52 am found this on the internet:

Step by Step to edit VIN, Flash, Code to Default, Clear Errors and Start System Time of the Airbag Gateway Module.

INPA: UIF (User Information Field) Report
1-Open INPA>select your car model (E60)>Functional Jobs>F3 UIF
2-You'll see a list of all control units with their ZUSB number and VIN
3-Print to PDF the report.
4-Identify the ZUSB numbers without your VIN and copy from the PDF and close INPA
Reopening this thread.

I too need to code the VIN in a secondhand SBSR satellite pillar module.

My car is a 2004 2.5i e85.

I'm stuck on step 1 above. I have INPA 5.0.6 and when I select car model E85, Functional Jobs is not an option like it is for some of the other models, e.g., E60, E65, etc. So I choose IDENT / read-clear error/info memory e85 instead. But then <F3> UIF is not an option, again like it is for some other models.

How can I determine the ZUSB (or Assembly Number) for my SBSR85 module?

Thanks

I did this on my car a while ago and updated the guide to make it a bit more suitable for the e85:

Hopefully that will help

Don't know about 'safety' ecu, but my understanding is dealers can't overwrite anything with INPA anyway - much more profit in selling a new unit. To overwrite modules I think you need a specialist with INPA+. But I may be wrong...

I had problems as well.

I've added my experience to this one: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=37521
So possibly read the last post, then if you feel brave, follow this thread:

Well I finally got the airbag light sorted last night. Thanks to all for the replies. I agree with a previous post that it's 'weird' not seeing the airbag light on.

The write up and google doc resources provided by TomR were a HUGE help. By looking thought the .HIS files, I finally figured out that the ECU family that I needed to use was SBR264, not SBSR85 which is what shows up in INPA and ISTA. Also, it was good to confirm that the ZUSB number is actually just the part number. There are varying opinions about that, which I've read, and since the e85 doesn't have the UIF <F3> feature in INPA to provide the nice table like you see for other models, it was very confusing until reading TomR's write-up.

I want to note that in WinKFP, when performing the update, I chose 'unverbalt' (unspoiled) versus the dash ' - ' Those were my only two options. I was not sure this was the right thing to do since I replaced my original part with a used SBSR module, but it worked. So may want to clarify that part of the write-up.

Now the car is ready for safety inspection!

I'm going through the same issue right now with my 2004 2.5 with the right door module 6939763. The original module was timing out and throwing an error. Replaced with a second hand module with the same number but now receive incorrect chassis number fault. I can't find 6939763 in any of the .HIS files but the main module 6939810 is in the SIM85.his file. I'm not sure how to update other than trying to find older daten files, any help would be greatly appreciated. :headbang:

If you’re using the same part number it will work... you just need to access the correct module and change the Vin. Can’t speak for the process as I didn’t do it personally, although it was done on my car. What programs are you using (and maybe someone else can help). Best of luck!

The plan was to use WinKFP but when I select comfort mode\enter ZUSB and enter the part number I get error 704, assembly identification number not found.... I do also have INPA, NCS Expert/NCS Dummy, BMW Coding Tool and Tool32. Which is the easiest to use?

Thanks for responding.
