DSC pump fault (solved?)

Post by rich48848 » Mon Jan 07, 2019 2:31 pm

Had the dreaded tripple dash lights and on further inspection found the 5DF0 - Pumpenmotor defekt code.

After a quick google session, I tried the "Tappy tap tap" method and hey presto, no more warning lights!

Got to love the design of that pump not using a brushless motor....

Is likely to be a temporary fix or just down to lack of use over Winter?

DSC pump fault (solved?)

Post by ph001 » Mon Jan 07, 2019 5:38 pm

Yep, it is the carbon brushes sticking which causes an intermittent connection to the stator. It's not so much down to a lack of use, more a lack of using the ABS / DSC as the pump only runs when locked up or losing traction so it's a good idea to exercise either / or every month or so. This video will show you exactly what the problem is...

..and here is how to remove the pump:

tappy tap tap.... is only a temporary fix unfortunately, but will work several times if you are lucky.

Sorry, AvE reference!

A brisk tap on the DSC motor cover will aparently losen a stuck motor brush...

Its amazing how big corporations strive to make things awkward to repair. Maybe they've never heard of the internet! £1500 is a pretty big incentive to crack open the 'sealed for life' module and get stuck in...

The guy doing the video defo needs to get a tripod! Unfortunately he skips the difficult bits: Getting the motor casing apart and getting it all secured back again. The repair appears to be loads of epoxy all over, a few holes drilled and tapped and then he paints it silver!

Another vid I found talks about drilling holes into the motor casing and breaking off tabs...

It sounds like it would be a lot easier to just cut an access hole in the side of the motor instead of taking it off.

You may well be right, although the swarf might be a concern. I bet the likes of ECUtesting have got it down to a fine art and can do one in minutes. If you do get creative with it, be sure to take pics and share on here.

Yes I saw that vid. Seems every BMW car and bike suffers this fault.

This german vid shows the dual hole drilling and C clip device used to get the motor case apart. (turn off sound before watching!)
