The shaft inside the steering lock assembly that runs between the ignition lock cylinder and the ignition switch broke in my 2003 Z4. This seems to be a common problem in BMW's, and there is a replacement part available for E34, 36 & 39, but I can't find a replacement for E85. Everyone says I have to buy the whole assembly. The original shaft is easy to remove, so I don't understand why no one makes a replacement. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bob

How much is one for a E39 or E46. Wouldn’t mind betting they are the same part. If only a few quid might be worth a punt. Ignition switch is the same after all.

$12-15 US dollars for E36 or E39 version. But they do not look exactly the same, so I have my doubts that it would work properly. May give it a try, as you say, but still wondering if any are available for an E85, or why not?

What about the E46 though. More common parts with the E85. You could check it out for sure on realoem.com

You were correct about getting the part that is used for E46. I found a Bross BSP42(FBA) (made in Turkey) that looked the exact same as mine, and it did work. Too bad the manufacturer and suppliers don’t list it as suitable for the E85 also. Would have saved me a lot of time and trouble trying to find one.
