Headlight Washer Hose Diameter

Post by Scooba_Steve » Thu Nov 15, 2018 6:37 pm

Anyone know the washer hose size? I have a leaky washer and am looking to put a valve in rather than replace the damn thing at £70 odd.

How would a valve help though? Wouldn't just putting some kind of bung in the hose do the same job, then just disconnect the electrical connection to the pump or code it out.

I put a valve in mine, like I did in an old Clio, to stop my washers leaking.

However unlike the Clio, the Z has the pop out washers, which then don't retract as the the valve stops the pressure from being released from the pipe. Didn't think that one through did I.

If it is leaking from the join like mine, disconnect, put some PTFE plumbers tape around the connection, then plug back together. Did this 6 months ago and hasn't so much as dripped once.

The washers are currently coded off, but the leak is from within the unit. I thought about bunging the tube but need the washer operable come MOT time, thought a one-way valve would just let me code them on when needed and also stop the emptying of the bottle

I didn't think it would get stuck out! Back to the drawing board I guess

The leak is normally on the piston seal inside the washer itself. My point was if you put the valve in one way which allows flow to the washers then it will still allow flow to the washers even when the pump is not pressuring, same as now. Still get the leak.

If you put the valve in the other way around then obviously it blocks fluid to the washers under all circumstances, much like a bung.

The spring inside the valve has enough resistance to stop the valve being opened by the weight of water in the bottle, but not enough to resist the pressure from the motor. Therefore the washers still work but it stops dripping.

Ah, now I'm with you - so the valve needs a certain amount of pressure to open. I guess if the jets are leaking anyway, that gets around the problem of them not going back down as well !

Sounds about right! Though I got a valve and it was clearly too small.

I'm also considering just putting in an on/off tap

Thanks very much, super useful from someone who has had the system apart
