3.0si engine rattle and a few other issues

Post by Beerman » Wed Oct 17, 2018 9:47 pm

I'll need to get it looked at, but where is a rattling noise coming off the engine accelerating and decelerating.

It always happens at the same points in the rev range. At just over 2000rpm, then again at just under 3000. If I'm stationary the rattle is there if I hold the revs at 2800rpm.

A quick internet search suggests timing chain?

There is a what sounds like a knackered bearing after turning the engine off for 10-20 seconds or so.

Something isn't quite right with the lights. When i am in auto mode I get a bulb warning every time the lights come on from start. The right indicator stays on from about 10 seconds, but no bulbs are out.

Then over the last couple of days the lights have stayed on once I've got out and locked the car up. Lucky someone pointed it out to me tonight as I had left them on.

Any of these common issues where the cause is going to be likely?

I emailed the dealer the other day and haven't had a response yet.

The rattle on key off is most likely DMF.
£750/£900 fix but common across the Si manual & very likely won't worsen or cause failure.

Cheers.

It has got a bit worse over the short time I've had the car.

It doesn't happen for the first 5 minutes of driving and then it's constant. It doesn't matter how much throttle, clutch pressed or not. Just the same point in the rev range.

Could be the valvetronic system

At standstill after you have set the car at 2000 + rpm and you get the rattle noise, let off the throttle and see if the noise stops abruptly around 1300-1500rpm..

If you hear the rattle when stationary and the engine is idling in neural - press the clutch. If its the DMF the rattling will stop.

Oh right.

The DMF is silent if stopping the engine pressing the clutch and gives the same quick clunk/thud as the rest I've tried do when I don't. Nothing unusual there I don't think.

The noise after turning the engine sounds like a duff bearing on a motor. I hope it's the radiator fan at worst.

The rattle only happens at 2800rpm when stationary. It doesn't matter if the clutch is pressed or not.

Could this be the serpentine belt and tensioner.

Could the rattle be the radiator coupling as it slows down? (After you turn engine off)
I have the same issue (assuming it’s the same?) and you cannot replace the coupling but will have to invest in a whole new fan and housing. :x

I bought a Bluetooth ODB reader and plugged it in today.

The car is showing fault code P1017. A quick Google shows that the valvetronic sensor.

I'm quite worried now that the rattling and sensor are linked. Sounds ominous.

I'll need to speak to a garage and have it checked out.

Any thoughts?

If that sensor was faulty you would notice a reduction in performance & probably a stumbling idle :?

The idle is fine.

The car is at the garage just now. Hopefully they'll be able to find the rattle and see if it's related.

Still no response from the garage I bought it from.

The garage has come back with 2A37 and 2A47 fault codes for the valvetronic eccentric shaft sensor.

The light beam in wrong in the headlamp. Hence he error.

Outside temperature sensor is throwing up a fault too.

A few times the stability control kicked in. He's diagnosed that as the ABS rings needing replaced.
