Water leaking drivers side window

Post by Tilly » Sat Sep 22, 2018 4:49 pm

Hi
Just noticed water dripping from the rubber seal 1/2 way down the angled part of the window on to the door window switches. The seals although old don’t look bad. Wondered if there is any adjustment I can do to make the door close tighter to the seal, or any other advice appreciated. E85 2003 2.5i
Cheers
Tilly

Apparently it's either
* the internal door membrane ripped or not sealed properly, or
* the door seal damaged or not sealing fully, or
* something else 🙂

I would start with some gummy pflege to all the seals around the doors it will revive them and if the water is getting around the seal stop it

Thanks! :thumbsup: I will get some ordered 🙂
It's also mentioned in this post, as is something about pulling up the seals.

Water leaking drivers side window

Post by Jamturbo » Sun Sep 23, 2018 3:49 pm

I had water in the footwell also. Turned out to be the old seal on the door membrane had become detached, letting water leak from behind the door card. The area in the corner as shown in the pic was probably the worst area to be dripping water in. I have changed the membrane. So far, ok.

Hi, did you need to change the membrane or just the goo?

I changed the membrane as the old one had mastic which I couldn't remove without tearing. Yes, a bit expensive for what it is.

Following the advice given I picked up a coil of Butyl (Amazon) and some Gummi Pflege (eBay).

After removing the panel visual inspection of the membrane didn't offer much in the way of clues so I checked the windscreen roof drain by pouring some water out of a jug into it. You can see the water heading down straight toward the carpet. The rubber seals are are bit stiff so maybe more water is hitting the drain hole than should when it rains. Hopefully the Gummi Pflege will soften up the rubber and improve the seal plus I'll add extra Butyl to the sound barrier membrane.
