roof is dead

Post by paolo7 » Mon Sep 10, 2018 2:08 pm

Hi, My 2003 roadster roof has suddenly stopped working, 2 days ago. I started engine, herd a strange humming noise which eventually stopped , I began to lower the roof in usual way when ,I noticed the action slowed down, so helped it to seat into fully open postition by pressing it home.
Now the roof will not go up automatically.
After successfully closing roof manually using the red handle , I now cannot open the roof at all. When I press the open button I get an orange light which goes out once I release button :(
Checked: fuses 12-31-51 -ok
Checked : voltage of Battery - ok

Can anyone help me diagnose my issue please
Cheers
P

talk to to mike ( ducklakeveiw)
your motor has probably drowned and needs moving into the boot
If you ever think I'm off my rocker.. Just put me back in it and walk away... It's the kindest thing

^^^^This. Also by pulling the red handle the bypass plunger on the pump will probably be stuck in so you have no hydraulic effort at all. Can all be sorted and relocated for £80 - £120.

Thanks for your replies, but the car has hardly seen the rain since owning the car of 2 years, it's always garaged, the first thing i did after i bought the car was to enlarged the drainage grommets. The Z has only 24k miles on the clock.

I suppose you don't know how much water it had in it before you owned it though. Mine also never sees rain but it does get washed a lot which is probably worse. I make a habit of checking water appears out of those drains every time I wash it though.

If you now have no hydraulic assistance at all after turning the red handle I am almost certain it will be the bypass plunger stuck in.

Failing that it could be low hydraulic fluid, pump head valves needing adjustment or maybe the bypass valve is faulty... viewtopic.php?f=3&t=107063&p=1561229&hi ... w#p1561229

Hi ph001,
Just looked the red ring/handle to ensure it is back in normal position, I noticed there is a little slack in the cable which to seem like the plunger may be stuck in, as I am still without any hydraulic assistance. Is there away to release this without a major strip down of the top?

Cheers

I'm not sure where all the "others" are based but its well worth a couple of hours drive to sort with any of them.... as all these boys save you a small fortune.....

My local Ex BMW indy mentioned car goes on to specialist jig when removing roof !! even i knew that was bollocks !

My roof isn't working. I have cleared the wells of water. And the drain holes are now clear. Trouble is the roof is still dead. Anybody know of anywhere near Bridgwater in Somerset that does the repair to the motors and any idea of cost? I know you can pull out the red cable in the boot to deactivate the hydraulics but it's still stuck! Any ideas how I can free it up so I can use it for now until I get it repaired.? Also the hand brake needs adjusting. I could probably do this myself if I had a tutorial video. Can anybody provide a link?
